Default Hard sell on rental

Last time I rented a bike I got the hard sell on buying insurance as expected, but does anyone know about the gap coverage? They say my own auto insurance or Visa/Mastercard coverage won't cover the gap.

How do they know what your insurance policy covers? He is just a flunky trying to sell what his boss ordered him to. As much as 50% of that isnurance fee is what the dealer keeps and is easy money for them.

Why ask us?

Are you willing to take the chance that one of us tells says you are covered and turns out to be wrong? Oops...sorry about that.

Call you insurance company / credit card company and ask them.

Then let us know the answer....

Our state auto insurance covers motorcycle rentals.
You should call your insurance person and ask....thats better than asking us....
I wouldn't believe anyone here with something that important!

Yep... It's not a hard sell....
It's one day insurance...
What
YOU
Need to do is call your agent, ask them if YOUR motorcycle policy covers you and rental vehicles. Then, if it does, have the binder faxed to that dealership. Problem and issue solved...

Having rented my first several rides on a Harley around the country I called my agent and asked. I had more than enough coverage and decided to pass on the POLICIES they were offering.

I was given a hard sell like "you will have to pay up front immediately for accident damage". And then there was another policy package to go along with the demand for immediate reimbursement that they claim to mandate.

What's crazy is how much they wanted to tack on to the rental's cost.

Neither my motorcycle nor auto, not even american express covers motorcycle rentals, I get the $20 Supplemental liability insurance, it limits my cost to $2000 in case of loss.
They don't force it on me though.

Rented from EagleRiders in Scottsdale, AZ last month. My Visa card covers the insurance. Call yours to make sure. I rentend a car from Alamo as well and that was covered.

I have an old Air Force buddy in Los Angeles, CA, who comes here every other year or so and I go there a couple times a year to visit family. When there I rent from Glendale HD, and when here he rents from Earl Small. He's a lawyer in a firm that specializes in Insurance litigation. When ever he's here he gets all the insurance he can and advises me to do the same when renting out there. His mantra is you can never have enough insurance if something happens and why have that worry while riding a bike that belongs to someone else when you should be enjoying the time on the road...I follow his advice, but that's my choice. Keep in mind, too, that once lawyers get involved in the off chance something DOES happen, ya' never know how long it'll be tied up and what you might have to pay in the interim only to have to fight to recover it after...my two cents.
