Default Gasket sealer?

I need to change the gaskets on the top of my transmission case on my '96 Dyna. Looks pretty straightforward. I bought the gaskets (typical grey heavy paper type) at my local indy shop and they recommended that I use nothing at all for gasket sealer, or some kind of varnish sealer (not sure what that is, honestly). I'm an old Chevy/Mopar gearhead and used to using red RTV on damned near everything.

So do I use nothing? Anything else better that won't break free and jam up an oil line?

I use the gasket only. YMMV.

Well, I swapped out the gasket on my oil filler cover and it's still leaking. Thinking of a very thin bead of permatex on there next.
