twin cam 88 running terible. please help!!!
Thanks in advance for help. I have an 06 heritage softail that I bought used last spring. This is my 3rd Harley (previous EVO heritage , and a tc streetglide ) . Ever since I got it, its had some issues. My problem is a terrible cough back thru the air cleaner and some decel POP/ backfiring. It is a fuel injected bike. I have checked all the intake gaskets , tried two sets of exhaust , and checked them for leaks, etc. The bike had a power commander usbIII on it with a set of hooker headers on it when I got it. Also has a kuryakn hi-five mach 2air cleaner. When I first got it , it would start its issues after it warmed up. And any time u let off the throttle, it would decel POP terribly. I have now installed a v&h fuel pak and v&h longshots . Still has the same air cleaner. The decel pop is way better, but still has the cough thru air cleaner at idle and just off idle up to bout 30% throttle. If u just barely roll into throttle , it will really start coughing and backfiring. I'm talkin like just were u can feel pressure on throttle cables. I have called the techs at v&h which are great by the way and even got different map setup from them because I thought my baffles are to short ( bought pipes used and the baffles were removed , and the ones that the guy gave me were bout 4" long and look cut down). So we run a map setting of codes for dials with no baffles and this made it run worse so I put original values back in for long shots. I've even taken my bike to an indy here to check for exhaust and intake leaks as well with no findings of either. So,..... Before I burn this s.o.b., can some one give me ideas of somethin else to check? Could it be coil, or a sensor or something? It's not blinking any lights on dash. Hope I have not forgot anything. Thanks again.

I have an 06 Fatboy, it had issues I took it into the deal for some hard starting and it would sometimes stall and spit back through the intake. I took it to the dealer for a warranty issue with the chrome. They asked about any other issues. When I picked it up they had replaced my injectors from an 8 degree to a 25 degree injector. All problems where solved.
If you still have the 8 degree injectors, I would have them replaced with the 25 degree injectors. There was a service bulletin, I am sure it is long out of date. You will not get any codes for the injectors because they are working the way they are suppose too.
I would call the dealer get them to run the VIN and see if they were replaced under the bulletin, if not then see if they will still do it for free.

No codes. I've also sprayed the intake seals down. I used starter fluid. No change in the engine reving or any thing. I also had my local indy check intake seals. They said they found nothin wrong with seals either. Tlb, thanks for that info. Is there a way to look at the injectors to tell 8 vs 25? Plugs looked good , nice dry brownish look. I however went ahead and put new irridiums in it recently any way during service. Thanks guys for info.

They are color coded and they have the part number. the easiest thing would be to call the dealer. They can check the service record to see if has been done under a service bulletin, regardless of where it was serviced.
I bet your problem is the injectors.

Next I'd take the PC out of the picture (disconnect it) and see if the bike runs better. It'll be lean and might not run perfect so I wouldn't run it far that way. But if the PowerCommander is funking up this should identify that fact. I've read other threads where the advice was to take the tuner out of circuit in order to isolate a tuner-related issue.
