Pikes Peak ride????
#21
I work in natural gas drilling as a Wellsite Geologist. I live on the drill site. To get there and to leave I have to ride on a 7-10 mile stretch of dirt road. Now, I don't commute it every day, maybe once or twice a week. Regardless, I have cleaned my air filter afterwards and it's a mess. When i get stuck behind cars or passed by oncoming semi trucks, it's a dust cloud. Another concern is bumps or nasty pot holes in the road. I usually go slow (under 30mph) and can avoid the bad ones. When I can't, I pop off the seat to take my weight off of the suspension. What kind of abuse can harley suspension hand before needing fixed up? Occasionally I hear a rattling noise when hitting a washboard of bumps. It sounds like clutch plates rattling, not sure exactly, but definitely from the motor....what is this rattling noise that sounds like clutch plates rattling when lugging really low.???
You do realize that's bad for the engine.

You bring up a good point. There are some tight switchbacks with some drops on the sides. Some touristas get a little "fear of heights" and will ride the "center lane". Not everyone, but there are those that think they're going to run off the mountain.
And as it is paved to the top, it's on my official list for this year.
BTW groupw, looks like the peak is gonna be hit with some snow again this weekend! And Independence Pass is scheduled to open May 11.

Sidetracking from Pikes Peak and going back to Trail Ridge, here's a video I made when I rode through RMNP last October. The road was in GREAT shape all the way across...

I lived a few miles from Pike's Peak in the early seventies. Too bad the road's all paved now, but a lot more of Colorado is paved than it was back then.

If you are into camping... they run the "Climb to the Clouds" race the week of 4th of July. Believe it is July 8th this year. The day before they allow you to camp out on the mountain and watch the race the next day. Great adventure and you get a front row seat. I did it years ago and had a great time!
