If i puchase a bike out of state and bring it into NY will I have to pay taxes (or any other gotchas?).. sorry if this has been discussed.. I searched and found a couple posts on CA which had restrictions in that the used bike had to have a certain number of miles (7500) on it... thanks!

You should get a bill of sale. You will be sales taxed on that amount, or on the book value of the vehicle if they think the bill of sale is unrealistic.

You will pay sales tax on any vehicle new or used no matter where it was purchased, at the point of registration.

And if you sell it, the new buyer will pay sales tax on the same vehicle.

And when he sells it, the new buyer will pay sales tax on the same vehicle.

And so it goes.........................................

Default Sales Tax

"Move to NH, no sales tax...."

Beautiful state, there was a time (20 years ago.) that I was contemplating a move to there.

But don't you get charged a surcharge on your property tax if you have a "Beautiful view?"
Who decides that, and how is it applied?
For instance if you had a view of "THE OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN" did you pay big for that? And after it collapsed (A National tragedy BTW.) Do the taxes get lowered?

Possibly the only F.U. thing that I've heard about the state.

And Oh-Yeah. N.Y. will apply sales tax when you register it.

Doesn't seem right if you previously owned it, Paid taxes in your original location and are merely registering the car that you own in a new state.

Does anyone know for sure how that works?
I'm guessing that if you paid taxes once that you should be O.K.?

RaSh is incorrect. If you already own it and are just registering it in NY because you are moving, there is no sale and thus no tax. Only if you are buying a bike and registering it will you need to pay tax at the DMV.

When you register it, you'll need a bill of sale. They will tax you on that amount

And in Massachusetts, if you pay, let's say $2,000 for a vehicle, the sales tax

would be $125 (6.25%) but if the "book" value on the vehicle is $6,000, you will

pay $375 in sales tax, even if you only paid 2k and the bill of sale says so.

"RaSh is incorrect. "
I saw this reply and was going to let it slide, but I'm weak and I have to respond.

I'm wrong a lot and have to take my lumps frequently, but not this time.

The OP asked "If i puchase a bike out of state and bring it into NY will I have to pay taxes (or any other gotchas?).. "

If he has not previously or does not now register it in his name out of state, he will be doing so for the first time in his name in N.Y. State, he will pay N.Y.S. taxes. From his site information I'm guessing that the OP is a current N.Y. resident buying a bike out of state and bringing it in. He will need to pay taxes somewhere, and it most likely will be when he registers it here in N.Y.

These statements,
"Doesn't seem right if you previously owned it, Paid taxes in your original location and are merely registering the car that you own in a new state.

Does anyone know for sure how that works?
I'm guessing that if you paid taxes once that you should be O.K.? "

All allude to the fact that my belief is that if in fact you owned it, paid taxes on it, registered it previously in your name in another state that my belief was that you would not be responsible for additional tax.

Sorry all, but sometimes you have to take the bait and respond.
