last year of a well built, non smog Harley
friend and I have been having this argument for some time now, and I promised him I would ask in here.
So what year do you think? I always say 03-04, he says 07-08

Last year of "non-smog" Harley probably 1972. If my memory serves me correctly, and sometimes it does not. I recall seeing Silver "EPA" stickers affixed to the air cleaner covers of the 1973 model H-D's.

well, we mean all that new crap: 02 sensors, cats, etc

o2 sensors are for EFI. so maybe 1998 carbd models. The EPA has been screwing with emissions since the early 1970's though.

Pressed together crankshafts that can twist are not what I would consider well built.
The pre-2003 Twin Cams were much higher quality than the 2003-later. But you might need to go back to the evo to get a well built motor. 1999
On Sportsters, the motor is well built to this day, but 2006 was the last year that was mostly unaffected by smog crap, but fortunately it is still not nearly as bad as the TC bikes
