If you had 7-8K to spend on a bike, what would you buy? And why. I'm a new guy looking for recommendations, what should I stay away from? How many miles are toomany?

Depends. Do you already have a bike? If so ... get a Pan or a Shovel. If not ... you're sorta stuck with the best newest evo you can find for the money.

If I could find one: 1977 XL1000CR, must have stock exhaust & airbox, otherwise not interested at any price.

Otherwise.......

4-spd, kickstart, chain drive, shovel Dyna. An excellent "Biker" bike.

Evo Roadking. (You can buy alot of used Harley on Ebay with $8k).

You can buy a new sportster for that or a very clean used one with low miles.
