How long since the old girl has been running? Once you have fuel ,air and spark. It could be the carb is in need of rebuilding. If the last owner didnt put stabil in the tank and let it run long enough to get in the carb. that is your problem. Another question what brand of carb is on it. mikuni or s&s?

Love to have that one, first thing would be to let Rob rebuild it with his magic touch(R&R Cycles). He now has his machine shop at his house up here near San Ann for you local Florida boyz who didnt know.

A Harley is no different to start as a car-
Think-
Fresh gas?
Spark plugs gapped right?
Battery charged too low?
All the wires connected?
Flooded?
Carb float working?
If you smell gas after kicking it you're giving it too much throttle- what kind of carb is on it? Does it have a choke lever or ****?
These bikes are pretty simple, they don't have a black box like the new bikes and they will run forever once you have everything set right.
If my 1953 has sat a long time, I static time it, change the plugs, charge the battery, put fresh gas in the tank, pump it a few times, keep the ignition off and just kick it, once the gas pressure is right you feel resistance when you are kicking it through.
Let off the gas entirely, turn on ignition, and kick it hard.
If it doesn't start-keep the ignition on, twist the gas full open and keep kicking it hard for about 5 times- that should start it.
My last question- doesn't it have a kick and electric starter?
If it doesn't have an electric start it may still have a on/off switch on the handlebars-
