Why not park it for a few weeks while you research better deals or improved quotes and then get er' done.
garand- dude - I'm sure you mean well but not everyone who owns a Harley is a brain surgeon or investment banker, give the guy a break, maybe financing isn't a great idea, but maybe he's not floating in a sea of cash like the rest of your friends and neighbors.

I'm no mechanic, but if I were you here's what I'd do:

Spend the money I was going to give the dealer for the labor on:

A service manual
Some tools
Case of beer for a buddy who has any sort of mechanical ability

You can't make it worse right?

[quote=jeffreydsilver;9582638]As long as you asked - Sounds like a bunch of crap! I would and you should have gotten all the information IN WRITING BEFORE you let them have the bike. Changing the cost of ANYTHING after the fact is a big red flag! What else are they going to come up with to charge you for?

RUN! Do not walk to the nearest exit. RUN! Then as others here have stated, start looking at other options.

a lot of us folks out there prefer to keep the old stuff

Cool

When I had the motor on my '96 BadBoy replaced under the Reman
program, I called around to different dealers and got prices.
I have around seven dealers in a 100 mile radius.
It was amazing how much the prices varied. One dealer even wanted
to charge me for building the engine crate, which was an extra $400 bucks.
If I remember correctly, 9 years ago, Cross Roads HD in Wilkesboro, NC
charged me $2795.00 total.
I thought about the new engine, but was sold on the Reman program because
it was saving me around $1000 bucks.
You get a warranty of 12/12?, so any problems are covered.
I'd check around to other dealers, or take some of these guys advice.
Your call.

Just make sure the shop you take it to is reputable. You dont want to post a bad experience!
They should give an itemized written estimate before anything is done.

Just a warning.Theres a lot of shops that promise a finished date, but somethimes that just doesnt pan out.

I am rescuing my bike in the morning and bringing it home while I do more research. I already found a couple other dealers that have come up with lower numbers and better deals, but I will also be looking at craigslist and such for other possible outcomes. Thank you all for the replies, they are appreciated.

I sent mine off last year, I do all my wrenching myself.

It will come back with new cases (especially 90 & 91's that had known case problems) and updates.

Motor looks and runs like new.

A friend of mine sent his in about 6 months ago and couldn't be happier. Also not mentioned is that any changes you made will be lost as the engine comes back pure stock, but with matching numbers and as stated a 12 mo. warranty.
