Ape hanger help please!!!
I just bought this 1995 wideglide with buckhorns i want to put some apes on it, i am 6-1 tall i am thinking 16inch apes not sure yet.
But my question is putting on the tall bars do i have to cut the wire harness and add wire or can i buy a exstension plug and play? I am not crazy about cutting the wires. What needs to be done?
What is the protocal for installing tall bars this is the first time i am do this to a bike.

There are lots of places that will sell bars prewired for whatever application you need. At 6'1" I think 16" are a good fit for you, I have 18" on my Street Bob and love them. I got everything from the guys at www.hillcountrycustoms.com 18" Narrow apes, prewired, plug and play, as well new brake, clutch and throttle cables that are the proper length. I personally would never cut into the stock harness unless I had too. I've done full electrical on a few late 70's jap bikes without problems but it's a pain to cut solder and cover it all up cleanly. I'd pay for plug and play 100 times over. Good luck, it's an easy mod even with the complete cable replacement.

What Skid_Lid said. I am 6' even and went with 16"... Insanely comfortable. Go with HCC. I used Namz extensions, LA Choppers apes and the cable kit from LA Choppers, and it was the same or just a little more than the kit from HCC would have been. Here, check these out:

Extending the wires is no big deal, why waste money on extensions?
Just stagger the joints, solder them up, and cover with shrink tubing.
Took me about an hour to extend my harness, cost only $5 worth of wire and shrink tube.

Did the same as ragtop did but took a bit longer since it was a Streetglide with cruise. Didn't even bother staggering the joints too much. Easy, peezy, lemon squeezy.

Seat will make a bit of a difference, maybe drop you and inch or a bit more, depends on the seat, I'd say don't worry to much about it.
I've been thinking about a sissy bar as well, same as what you are describing, found a few on ebay, not sure if there are cheaper options out there or not, I'm sure I could get a metal shop to make one for less than $100.

If you saw some of the disasters I have seen/repaired from inexperienced "electrical experts" you would cry. I'm just saying, if you are not proficient at soldering, you can, in short order chase rabbits down holes you would not imagine. Youtube may have some good vids that point out the importance of 1) clean strands 2) good mechanical fit for added strain relief, 3) the benefits of paste flux 4) the correct solder and heat application 5) proper heat shrink techniques.
