What's up with boots?

My first motorcycle trauma I helped out with, the guys foot was laying next to his head, completely detached because of the peg and being stuck under the bike as it slid. People think I'm crazy for riding a Harley and working for a trauma center, it just reminds me of what I need to do to keep safe. Oh, when the guy rolled through the door, the doc pretty much threw his leg away. Said, "well that's a pointless limb now".

I wear boots on long rides. If I'm doing local ride I'll wear sneakers. I don't wear a helmet so I'm not gonna stress over my feet. Ideally, yeah you should dress for the slide, not for the ride. But what the hell, if I'm that worried I shouldn't be on a motorcycle.

always wore boots when riding just because it was part of my apparel, but even more so when my co-worker told me of when he laid down his bike, and wearing just sneakers, his footpeg went right through his foot - OUCH! I never want to experience that...

I'm not going to preach about what a guy should wear when riding a motorcycle. I caught a rather small stone right off my right big toe at 60 mph. Shattered it,of course wearing shoes. Never again.
Sure it may be too hot for boots or too warm for a jacket but once you see/feel the alternative this question doesn't come up for debate.
