My brother and I rode the Dragon two years ago- me on an Electra Glide and he on a Honda ST1300. It was one of the most challenging roads I'd been on, and I've been riding for over 42 years. Take your time, watch out for the trucks and crotch-rockets (who were routinely passing us on blind curves) and don't even think about trying to watch the scenery and you'll be fine.
Don't miss the "Tree of Shame", with all the bike parts of the guys who overestimated their machines or their skills.

Haven't ridden it on the softail but go all the time on the sportbike.

The Dragon...it's awesome. I went last May I was on the Dragon when I went around a blind curve and a Tenn Dept. of Transp. dump truck was BACKING UP in MY LANE. I'm glad I was going slow. I layed on the horn and the RUB jumped out of his truck and I chewed his Azz and asked him what the hell he was thinking!?!? I also asked him where his spotter was. It was pretty nerve racking.....like I said though he was backing up in my lane .....I had no where to go and it was a blind curve.. The guy was a IDIOT!
It sure is fun but be CAREFUL! Ride with some sense and you won't have any problems. Go early in the morning.

Several years ago I met a semi on the dragon and I was on my Goldwing with sidecar. I was all the way off the road when the semi passed me and all that was left of my lane was about a foot. If I had met him during one of the many curves, I would have been wiped out. I've seen pictures of semis on the dragon that have wreaked and they weren't pretty pictures.

I'm familar with 28, 143, and the Skyway. Marysville, Robinsville, Alcoa, Tellico
Funny thing is that I belong to a sportbike site also, most of those guys accept
my harley as a work of art. Here I am slay'n the Dragon in 2005

During the summer, I think the RV's are more of a hazard the the seldom seen semi's. Watch out for grandpa and grandma who just have to try the dragon in a land yacht
I gotta admit, though, that the first time a crotch rocket passed me in my lane caused me to have a unanticipated pucker.
