Mike's Famous employee dies from motorcycle accident injuries
DAMIAN GILETTO, The News Journal
Posted Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at 10:29 am

An employee of a motorcycle store, who was injured while transporting a motorcycle, has died from his injuries, according to Cpl. Jeffrey Whitmarsh of the Delaware State Police.

Yuriy Kovalchuk, 45, of Newark was trying to move a motorcycle into a secure area of Mike's Famous Harley-Davidson Sunday night when he lost control of the bike, went down an embankment and through a chain-link fence before crashing into a concrete culvert that runs parallel to I-295, Whitmarsh said.

Kovalchuk, an employee who provided security for the store, was not wearing a helmet during the accident, which resulted in severe head trauma as well as a collapsed lung, Whitmarsh said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Talked to one of the guys who works there and he said it was after hours. The guy worked security and there was a bike left out. He called the manager and the manager told him to move it inside. This guy took that as ride it inside. This guy had no m/c endorsement and had never rode in his life. Apparently he was lying there for almost 4 hours before he was found.

It's very sad this happened. It does sound like his widow will be owning the dealership before too long.

That is a sad story, but the fault is on the guy, not the dealer. If he didn't know how to ride he shouldn't have gotten on the bike or he should have pushed it. The question should be why he layed there for 4 hours and why the manager didn't check on him after a reasonable length of time. There might be a liability issue on that part.

Its a shame, but I'll bet the cops are asking two questions;
First is how did the bike got left out in the first place?
Second was the manager aware that the guy had no idea how to move/ride it?

That depends - does the manager always check on the nighttime security guy at several points during the evening?
Why'd the security guy ride the bike?
If he's security, why even move the motorcycle? You're there to watch over it all night..

I think this is tragic and probably the fault of several mistakes but I wouldn't go too quick to finger pointing at everyone around the guy.

If he had the smallest idea of how to ride the motorcycle when he had no legal recognized ability to with the state, AND riding w/o a helmet, then he was a dummy. If he had no experience at all on a motorcycle, then my previous statement should have the last word changed to something a little more harsh.

Another Darwin Award nominee.....

Tragic for everyone involved, but I think there has to be more to the story!

Depending on what bike was left out, I don't believe very many could push an ultra classic (or any heavy model) very far or up even a slight incline. A tragic loss no doubt, but accidents don't happen, they are caused.
