Contact the state bar in your area. Or visit their website. They will have a free attorney referral service. And do get a second opinion from a hand specialist.

As far as the details to his finger, maybe dislocated is the wrong word, I'm sorry I'm not a doctor, when you look at it you can see where the bottom half of it is straight and the top half looks like it is just not attached and off to the left. I'm sure that doesn't help much to explain it. He has had surgery on it to fix it which they were unable to. He has had a second opionion and that doctor said that they were unable to do anything for him. I'll have to look online to see if I'm able to find a lawyer in our area that deal with motorcycle accidents specifically, you would think the area we live in (Knoxville TN) would have several. I've expressed to him not to give up and to keep trying to find a doctor that will take him, but with his already having surgery I guess no other doctors want to touch him, have you heard of anything like this before? The woman that hit him who was very rude I might add, telling him that he needed to learn to ride that thing, speaking about his bike, did in fact get a ticket, however both she and my father have progressive and their insurance company.

I'm in Texas and I have been in two lawsuits related to accidents. This is typical for Texas: If the case is a slam dunk you can expect a settlement of the lesser of 3x medical or the maximum of their comprehension insurance (usually motorists carry either $25k or 100k),. Your lawyer will get 33-40% of that (depending on what you have negotiated and that depends on quality of your case) and you will have to pay your own medical out of the settlement. This will take 1-2 years.... if you sue for more than their coverage then you can expect it will take more like 2-4 years... so if you do the math, assuming you sue for less than their coverage amount you will basically walk away with the cost of your medical expenses in your pocket.... On a completely different subject, he probably wants to get physical therapy on his hand, document the entire experience (pain, progress, everything) and keep his receipts.

In truth, I have known a couple people who have represented themselves (in slam dunk cases) and done well enough that they probably came out better than they would have with a lawyer.... 40% is quite a chunk.

"Good" and "Lawyer" in the same sentence? Hmmm.....an oxymoron if I do say so.

I used these guys. They are in Georgia. They had no problem handling my case in NC and thats all they do is motorcycle cases. And I got a great settlement.

Why not just cut the finger off and be done with it?

I'm not sure how it is in TN, but in WI you have 3 years from the time of the injury to file the paperwork for a lawsuit. If something like that applies in TN, you have no reason to be in a rush to settle with the insurance company. Talk to an attorney, talk to ten, or more. Talking is free and decent attorneys will give you good information on your rights and what they can do for you.

I was in an accident 8 years ago and when the other persons insurance company started giving me a runaround my insurance agent gave me the name of a local guy who specialized in auto accidents and injury cases. The guy was a shark, but he also told me to not sign any paperwork, let him talk to the other insurance company, and take my time to heal, and find out how my injuries affected me long term. If you settle quickly you don't get that chance. After almost three years of medical bills and trying to get back to my life the other insurance company was willing to settle for a reasonable amount. the amount covered all medical bills, attorneys fees, and some extra but not much extra.

find a lawyer who will work on contingency...split 50/50 on whatever he can get above the original 21k offer plus all medical bills.
back to your original question--to find a good lawyer you need to find a cemetery. lawyers are scumbag P.O.S.. jmo
+1 on lawyers! You ever see Philadelphia with Tom Hanks? What do you call 1000 lawyers chained together at the bottom of the ocean?....a good start! Some chick pulled in front of me 7 years ago. I broadsided her car, flew over the roof of it and landed on my head. I was wearing a full face helmet at the time too. Witnesses told the cops I didn't stand a chance due to the speed at which she pulled out in front of me. Anyway, the skull fracture put me in a coma for a week, life support for 4 days of that week, broken ribs, smashed my left arm (titanium plate), broken shoulder blade, smashed out some teeth and ruptured my spleen. This got me 2 years off work and a crap load of physical rehab to get me mobile enough to get back to work again. My bills were paid but do you know what the settlement amounted to? $70,000! Because of my TBI I get debilitating headaches and I'm facing a risk of having a stroke because of it for the rest of my life. My op is that I should've recieved 4 times that amount at least! Lawyers didn't do a damned thing for me. They might have this 50 50 thing happening but they also told me they have a 50% chance of losing too! It wasn't worth it for me to pursue the matter after learning about that little stat. I know it affected you on a personal level but the reality of it is that you're probably going to waste a lot of your time and money pursuing this to end up with nothing in the end.
