Default Cali Freeways?

Re: Lane Splitting on Cali freeways, Got back into riding after many many years. Loving freeway commuting on my FLD Switchback. I love going down the "diamond" lane at 70+ mph on the way home, but I envy those who are able to zoom down the double-yellow line in the a.m. I figure if I'm nervous about it, then I'm not ready. Suggestions? I'm not talking about lane splitting at stopped intersections, I'm referring specifically to the freeway diamond lane splitting. Thanks for any tips.

Don't do it until you are ready. I started by passing only one car at a time, no hurry. It was pretty easy because I was on a naked (narrow) K100. Eventually you will get comfortable. It's best if you can follow someone else. Don't try to keep up if they are going to fast for you. Watch out for the clowns with the "You can't pass me!!!" attitude and other bikers behind you. Good Luck!

And don't get too surprised or mad when you get a ticket for splitting the double yellows. It's not legal. Stay in the lane when you make a pass or keep following. I've found that many will actually move over and give room when they see or hear you coming. But that's down here in San Diego County. Never done it in LA.

Unless you run into a really pissy CHP or you're hauling *** 99.9% of the time you won't get cited for riding in between the dbl's. Used to ride the 57 all the time going to El Toro and followed a of motor units doing just that.

If you aren't ready don't do it. It does take some getting used to at first but after that you splitting it all the time when traffic gets deep.

Thanks, these are good tips. I thought about following a CHP (but not too close!) because I figure, Hey here's a guy who must know what he's doing.

Yeah, I've been noticing most riders stay just inside the double yellow (in the diamond lane) but some do go right in between the yellows. Thanks.

Good advice from all. Take your time, like others said, if they see you most will move to give you room.
