I've asked this exact same ? on HDF before-- One of the b est tips I received was include a flashlight. Got a nice, small Magnum flashlight, just in case. Be safe.

Electrical tape, some wire. I carry a few bolts, screws and nuts too. Such as ( for my bike ) the battery terminal bolts and a screw the will hold my seat to the fender. A small amount of hardware doesn't take up much room but can be real handy at times.

+1 on the CruzTools. Our local dealer had them 50% off during Christmas, so I snatched one.

Zip ties, Mechanics wire, Torx bits, Electrical tape, small mag light, Small hand tools, Adj. wrench and such...Leatherman is nice, but you cant fit it in everywhere. which brings me to the ole stubby screwdriver...That thing has saved me a couple of times. Spare plugs, a 10 ft lenght of 16 ga wire. Obviously, the kit can be adjusted up or down depending on the distance of your trip. I carry a small tool bag in my bags at all times since the time my battery lead came loose on interstate 40 and I didn't have a screwdriver to take the seat off!
