Amputee on a bike

I'm envying all you guys with extra prosthetic legs and feet. I've got 1 and that's it. I wouldn't mind having another foot. I'm using a flexfoot for everything I do. I became a left BK 13 years ago. The best set up for me is to have a heel and toe shifter and floorboards. I have to hard of a time keeping my foot on pegs. As many have said, I drop my heel down on which ever end of the shifter I want to hit. I put longer shifter pegs on to make it a little easier to hit.

I ran into a guy today at the local indy shop. He wrecked out four years ago and finally lost his left leg from that accident six months ago. Dude didn't miss a beat! He rode the whole time, still does!
I know our situations are different, but he made me feel like a bitch for hanging up my spurs for a while.

My buddy rides a roadglide with a sidecar. Has no use of legs so the sidecar is for balance and his wheelchair. If you look at my Avatar pic you can tell my bike used to be a roadglide (silver engine, roadglide decals). I switched my roadglide front end for his batwing frontend. The reason for this was he struggled with the wind buffeting the batwing fairing the roadglide fairing doesn't have that buffeting as it is attached to the frame (remember he doesn't get to use his legs for leverage.) So one weekend we swapped the fronts out. I now call my bike an FLFURG FURG stands for F**ked Up Road Glide
Other than that mod he has a hand shifter and hand rear brake.
So anyone out there that is mobility challenged where there is a will there is a way,,,and also lots of people on sites like this that can offer solutions to your riding challenges.

I have all my limbs but am paralysed from the knees down due to spinal cord injury from a wreck back in 96. I wear AFO (ankle / foot orthotic) on both legs. When I had my sportster I used my heel to down shift and had an longer peg and was able to slide my foot under it and upshift by lifting my leg.
I bought my Deluxe in 06 and the heel/toe shifter is a breeze (heel to down shift and upshift). Braking has always been the same using my heel.
I walk with a cane it folds up and I carry it in my back pocket. Can get them at Wal Mart or Wal Greens for about $18.00.
I get more questions about where I keep my cane when riding than anything LOL.

I was thinking longer shift pegs too just because the wider tank on my rkc. We'll see. I was good on the dyna, 90% good on the rkc. Just a matter of repetition. The flex foot is plenty good. That is all i wear. It's nice to have a spare, but to be honest i don't like walking in the spare. Not much give. But if something goes wrong water skiing i'm not out much. Good feet aren't cheap.

When there is a will there is a way. I have several amputee friends who still ride. A few on unmodified bikes, some with minor mods and some who have converted to trikes or hacks.
Many years ago I met a man at a rally up near Vancouver, BC. He was paralyzed from the waist down. He had modified his bike for full hand controls and had retractable outrigger wheels that he could manually deploy when he was stopping. He had a rack for his wheelchair and could mount and dismount without any assistance. His bike looked like a Rube Goldberg but he was still doing what he loved. He did all the modifications himself. I think about him when I start whining about how tough life is, just to mentally slap the crap out of myself.

Gypsylady, I think I met the guy you are talking about that lost his leg. A few years ago they were staying in the same hotel as us in Austin, TX for a rally. I was impressed with his set up and even more impressed when he said he rode all the way there. The guys he were with were from Jennings but I don't remember where he said he was from. Cool guy. He was riding a VTX I think, had a lever like you said went up and over the top of the tank so he could shift with his right hand and still clutch with the left.
Sounds like Cee to me. He's amazing! Has a great sense of humor too!
My Apologies, I lost track of this thread!
