Illinois Motorcyle Red Light Law
#21
Although, it's not "legal" to run the red, it's an "admissible defense" (whatever....)

There's one stoplight on my way to work that won't trip for my newer, aluminum Evo EG, but works when I ride my older, cast iron Shovelhead EG. The Evo even has one of those magnets under it....or it did last time I looked. May have to check again, those things don't always work anyway.
Used to blow through that light after two cycles. If I waited around for a car to help me trip the sensor at that early hour of the morning, I would be there for about an hour. Now it's legal, so I'll have to find another way to feel like a righteous outlaw.

The law provides you the opportunity to proceed through a steady red light only if certain criteria are met. You must stop, wait two minutes and then proceed. You do not get to disregard the stoplight entirely.
This legislation was enacted because most motorcycles and bicycles lack enough mass to activate traffic light sensors. Hope this helps clear things up..

now that makes sense...rare, but annoying t sit and wait...

I think waiting 2 - 3 minutes is Too long if nothing is coming. Thats a long time to sit for nothing. The law should be, imo, come to a complete stop, then procede if / when all is clear.
In my state, the sensor pick up motorcycles well at most intersection.
The bicycleist in my area have to be amoung the dumbest in the nation. They dress up like Lance Armstrong and ride on very fast, busy hwys and ride with no regard to saftey and few have little consideration for others on the road. I have a road bike and love to ride but I'm sorry, I would never do what I see them do.

I support this. I was at a left turn signal the other week and waited, waited, waited. No cars anywhere. Was I supposed to sit there all day? Made sure it was safe and went on through the light.
So, what's a cop expect you to do when he pulls you over for running a light, when the light won't change?
