Default SE Compensator and Oil Grooves

Happy New Year everyone.

I just installed a 103 kit and Andrews 54H cams on my '07 Fat Boy. Immediately thereafter, I started noticing some clunking, sometimes at startup and often during downshifts and hard acceleration. I attribute this to the stock compensator. Thus, I'm going to install the SE.

Looking at the posts here, there is some discussion about the need to mill grooves in the SE sprocket to ensure sufficient lubrication. Attached is a sample photo I jacked from another post.

So, a couple questions:

1. The current HD part no. is 40274-08A. The "A" suggests to me that the original 40274-08 was upgraded/modified in some way. Did the "A" version eliminate the lubrication issue?

On this point, there was some discussion on a long post here in early 2011 that HD was going to come up with a new version, maybe to address this issue. Not sure if that's accurate, but I haven't seen anything to indicate that happened, other than the part no. now having the "A."

2. For those who have installed the part without adding the "oil grooves," can you let the rest of us know what your experience has been and the number of miles you have put on it?

As always, I appreciate the input!

I think I read somewhere that the "a" part # includes some new design washer but not sure if it has to do with the oiling issue. I do know that my dealer told me the new one is on backorder.

If you look at the part it does indeed look as if they have grooved the washer. Probably for lubrication but they will never admit to it.

Had my SE comp done last month.. They told me they installed the "new" improved design, so I checked the box it came in & yes, mine is also the "A". Guess they adressed the issue.

its funny cuz they wont admit theres a problem with the POS stock comps but when i ordered mine it was on backorder too, although they never admitted it was on backorder but it took almost 2 months to get it when everything else you order takes about 2 days. funny how that works. i tell you though it was one of the best upgrades you can do to your bike

Back in 07 there was a thread the addressed the Clunk on start up..

Had my tuner to dail in less timing at 0 rpm's and throttle when I put in the cams, that took out the cluck at start up. It has since then turned over a lot slower on the first rpm when starting and hasn't clunked since then

reporting back on the condition of my s.e. compensator after about 13000 miles. installed on my 07 dyna.
there was some light freting and red coloration on the bore. i'm going to clean the bore and shaft with some fine crocus cloth and reinstall. my s.e. comp is NOT the upgraded one with the part no. ending in A. all in all i'm semi satisfied. it should not have to be looked at every year. next year i will probably replace it with the "a" part.
