Dealer Screwed Up Again

Dealer Screwed Up Again
I ordered a bike overseas while I was deployed and picked it up in Clarksville, Tn at Appleton's Harley Davidson. I have had the bike for a little over 2 months, put 700 plus miles on it. I taged it and got the title for it. I moved to Oklahoma because I got out of the Army and I have been here for about 3 weeks now. Now I have had problems with Harley and the Overseas Military Sales Corperation because the bike that I picked up didn't come with FOB's for the Security System. A month after I picked the bike up I received the FOB's because they were on back order. Went to the Harley shop here in Oklahoma to get the FOB's programed to the Security System only to be told that my bike didn't have the Security System on it. So after dealing with both companies again on trying to get the Security System that I paid $300 for, the Harley shop here in Oklahoma ordered the system for me and was gonna install it when it came in. Well two days ago I get a phone call from Appleton's in Clarksville, Tn saying that there is a problem with my bike. They said that they had my bike. Now the first thing that went through my head was " How do you have my bike if my bike is in my garage." He said that they gave me the wrong bike and that the bike that I had belonged on the showroom floor 700 miles away. He asked me if I was still in town and said that he needed to get that bike back. Well I went home to check all my paperwork, and low and behold none of my paperwork matched the bike. My insurance didn't cover it, the VIN didn't match the title that I had, and it didn't match the registration, good thing I didn't get hit or get pulled over, I would have been in jail. Well they ended up bringing my bike to me, so I now have another brand new 07 Heritage Softail Classic sitting in my garage, this time it really is my bike cause I checked the VIN on the bike to my title that I have. The only difference between the bike I had and my actuall bike, is that instead of having 700 plus mile, I have 2 miles on my bike. Has anyone ever heard of this happening to anyone else. I'm kinda anxious to see if any other dealers have screwed up like this. Leason learned, check the VIN before you leave the dealer.

Sounds like you went way over your quota for dealing with dumbasses this year. The dealer screwed up, the insurance agent screwed up, and the tag office screwed up. I am glad you got it straightened out satisfactorily. Now, Appleton's is stuck with a bike that they are gonna have to sell as used. You got the free use of a bike to get used to riding again. Oh, and congratulations on becoming a civilian again. Where were you over here? I am at Speicher.

No doubt it was their screw up but you can bet it'd been yours if something had happen along the way. Good point to remember though -- I was having my bike shipped over here but got word a PCS is looming and the guys as ENCS are working to see if they can divert it to the States -- hate to do it as I'm sure I could get some riding in over here but the end cost will be about 750 less considering they aren't shipping it over here.

wow---- thats strange.
however, of all the new bikes/cars ive bought over the years- i dont ever recall checking the VIN at the dealer. granted, sometime soon after i would- but not at the dealer.
and yes- if something were to have happened, it woulda been on you!
at least they made it right and gave you the bike you paid for.... but, im wondering what theyll do with the 700-mile bike. sell it as new? demo? used?

Happened in Dec 92 with my buddy and a snowmobile. But we didn't know until AFTER the DNR stopped us for a routine trail side check of paperwork.
Took a lot of explaining and some radio calls on their part to sort it out. Needless to say he punished that sled the rest of the weekend, that's the kind of clown he was. Monday he got his, and the one he had was destined to be a rental anyhow, so it worked out for both parties.
Now in your case, I wonder who at the dealer that delivered the wrong bike got a serious piece of foot wear stuffed in their gluteous maximus.

BIG breath, hold it...now exhale slowly. You have a brand new bike with 0 miles, OK so you have to go through break-in again. I'm glad for you. Enjoy the new, new bike!
