Don't feel bad your not the only one this has happened to.

I was talking to this guy I met and he picked up his new bike, put 3k in accessories and then rode it to Datona bike week from Jersey. When he got back, the dealer showed up at his house one day to pick up his bike. It was the right bike model but wrong Vin. That bike was picked up and sold to the right person as a demo and he got the right bike with all 3k worth of brand new accessories.

It ended up as a free rental!

If they have to screw up - that's the type of screw up you want!

Thanks for your service, grats on the new ride and welcome home!!

At my dealer, when you pick up the bike, the salesman is required to stand next to you and read the VIN off the bike while you verify it on the delivery ticket. I always wondered why, now I know. I'm glad it worked out in your favor.

I would think that you should take part of the blame for this screw up. Sounds like you didn't check your paperwork before you signed on the dotted line, just an observation.

That just means that they already did that once, too....

Not necessarily...My '07 has 750 miles on it and runs flawlessly.I don't make a practice of complaining about HD quality, but with 750 miles on it I'd wouldn't trade it for an unknown new one right out of the crate.

....dealer screwed up, the insurance agent screwed up, and the tag office screwed up. ....

I would agree the dealer messed up I would NOT agree with the insurance co or DMV screwing up. If you ordered insurance over the phone and gave them the vin off the title all the insurance company does is make sure the vin is a valid one for the type of vehicle your requesting insurance for. You'd be screwed if you got into and accident since the VIN didn't match. Unless the DMV requires a vin verification; I know Colorado required one for every vehicle I had there including trailers, then they simply issue a registration based on the title.

Sounds like you went way over your quota for dealing with dumbasses this year. The dealer screwed up, the insurance agent screwed up, and the tag office screwed up. I am glad you got it straightened out satisfactorily. Now, Appleton's is stuck with a bike that they are gonna have to sell as used. You got the free use of a bike to get used to riding again. Oh, and congratulations on becoming a civilian again. Where were you over here? I am at Speicher.
They will probably put it in there rental inventory. I have never heard this happening before. I bet someone will lose their job over this screw up!
