When I start my 2010 Heritage, it moves forward just a little even with the clutch pulled in or when it's in neutral. Any ideas why I get this movement?

 

Happens a lot with just the clutch pulled in but I never heard of it happening on any bike while in neutral?

I seldom ever start while in gear and the clutch pulled in. But it did move the few times I've did it. more if she's cold.
but I don't ever remember it moving while starting in nuetral.

 

Clutch needs adjusting !

 

In gear with clutch pulled its going to jump because clutch driven and drive plates stick together from the oil. That's normal. If you have it in neutral and clutch engaged (how it should be started) it should not jump. i have rolled my back to a curb on a slight incline. Made it difficult for it to jump in neutral even though the light was on. It started with more of a clunk then a move. My guess is you need to make sure motor mounts are tight. If it's not that you may have a bent shift fork. All the gears shift OK? I would start with the clutch and cable adjustment, make sure oil is correct and not to full first.

I always start in gear and get a little surge.....normal. Not sure why starting in neutral would be considered the right way.

 

I always start in neutral too. That's how I was taught. I figured it is just good practice. Avoid that unexpected lurch forward by having clutch depressed as well. Safety first.

 

Because it puts less load on the starter motor and helps it last longer. That 'little surge' you experience when you start it in gear is evidence of the extra stress on the starter. I sometimes start mine in gear after a short stop when it's fully warmed up, but I wouldn't make a habit out of it. I never start it in gear when it's cold.
