Sure there is not a right/wrong way as long as it works but just trying to be correct for what Harley says in their owners manual for normal starting. Killing the motor at a traffic light to me would be hit the starter in gear with clutch out will get job done. My 4x4 has a button just for that. However, it is listed in the manual as a !WARNING , Harley's highest category under safety definitions -- Shift transmission to neutral before starting engine

I don't know about you, but having a Harley and finding neutral is a lesson in frustration. There will be times where I will sit there for a min or longer trying. Even the mechanics confessed that getting to neutral is very hard on Electra Glides or any other model is a tricky proposition. I mean " why is this so hard" if the company wants you to follow advice in the manual. Beats the Sh*t out of me

Neutral is easy to find on a five speed but he new six-speed can be tough. I bet if the OP re-thought it he'd realize there isn't much if any movement when starting in neutral.

Never start a bike in gear unless it's been running a while and then only in a pinch always hit neutral before you touch a starter button please that's why a lot of cars have interlocks you must be in park or neutral to start and the clutch in . Plain common sense and a number of safety factors involved . Seen more people dump a bike hitting that button while in gear than you'll ever wanna know , best is when the have the clutch in , start then forget neutral and let the lever out . JERK , JERK nosedive sideways or fold a kickstand ....................

Use 10 w 40 instead of 20w 50 in the primary. A lot less oil drag on the clutch plates when cold. Stops the forward surge with clutch pulled in on cold mornings

im on my third Ultra Classic and have never had any issues finding neutral. been to the riders edge and skilled riders courses and have been taught to always place the bike in neutral, clutch in and front brake on before hitting the start button.

Tme for clutch adjustment, should not surge in neutral. Normal to surge in gear, especially when cold.
