I started my sons on bikes at 8. I felt it would make them better car drivers when they reached 16.
It worked. They are 30. 38 and forty now with eight bikes between the three of them. All with good driving records and no accidents that they caused.
Here is a pic of my oldest at age 10 on his 90 cc Yamaha styled just like my XS1100. He would ride around the subdivision and use signals at the corners, watch for cars backing out of driveways. Also got them off road bikes that they tore around in.
They also do all of their own work on the bikes.

kids<---- Priceless. Do whatever it takes to enjoy as much as you can with them and never regret it for a moment. You don't wanna cry when "Cats in the Cradle" plays on the radio. You'll look like a *****.

I too think used bikes will be the best bet. As stated earlier get his first. You will need to be on foot for at least a little while to help him learn. Find you another used one and you guys will be set.
