Welcome to the great desert southwest.
After you get settled in, make sure you head north and take a weekend trip up here to Las Vegas.
First beer 's on me.

Emission testing is not state wide, Just the real populated counties like Maricopa where Phoenix is located.

How does one establish where they test their vehicle?

You will love the year round riding. We have great nearby mountain roads for the summer, will take you over 9000 ft. In the winter, stay low. Best of both.
Emission testing requirements are based on your address. The plate tags are a little different in appearance between test and no-test. If you live in a no-test location and and commute in, the only way to catch you is if an LEO sees you often with your lunchbox strapped to the rear. Sometimes they cruise business parking lots looking for out of state plates or no-test tags. Don't hear about that very often. No hassle on open carry, in fact I think you may get better treatment

Do you have to move to Phoenix? Bikes in the Tucson area don't have to be emission tested. And the best thing is, we're not Phoenix, so you should move here.

Oh lighten up Phoenix guys, I'm just kidding.

This was taken from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality website just for reference:

Exempted Vehicles
  • Most model year 2007 or newer, except reconstructed, vehicles
  • Most model year 2009 or newer original equipment alternative fuel vehicles
  • Model year 1966 and older vehicles
  • Vehicles designated as "collectible" (requires collectible vehicle insurance, reported to Arizona Motor Vehicle Division by insurer)
  • Electric powered, golf carts or vehicles with engine displacement of less than 90cc
  • Motorcycles registered in the Tucson metropolitan area
  • Apportioned vehicles (licensed in more than one state)
  • Vehicles leased to a person residing outside the emission control areas
  • Vehicles transferred between dealers (wholesale)

No emissions testing here in Tucson for the past couple of years and I just renewed my license and registration on two Harleys for the five years that are permissable so don't have to worry about that here in Tucson til 2016....and at my age fo 70 may not be around then....but hope so....

Thanks, all. Let' s see: Tuscon or Phoenix ???? Unfortunately, it has to be the Phoenix "area" as the father-in-law is still in that area. Have been looking at acreages in Wittmann, Buckridge, etc 'cause I can't and won't do the HOA crap, and need shop area.

C'ya all there: party at my house !

It is actually Maricopa County that requires emission testing, which includes the Phoenix area. We are the only county on the US that requires it.

The state government voted to get rid of emissions testing for motorcycles a couple of years ago. We are waiting for approval from the EPA to no longer require emissions testing, should be no longer required after July 1, 2012..
