All these new bikes and puddles of oil......
#22
I was at the dealership most of yesterday and I saw only one bike dripping oil. It was an old, and I do mean OLD, Sportster that was in for service. I don't know what service, because you don't have to change the oil. That's done as you ride it. It drips out, you put new in.
Anyway, within a few minutes, a couple of drops of oil appeared beneath it. I have no idea what year it was, but the shifter was on the right side. I haven't seen one of those in years.
He even put "Then came Bronson" eyeball stickers on the tank.

That was an ironhead. 1974 at the latest unless it was a 1975 that had the linkage removed and the shifter put on the right.
My shovel leaks oil. I got worried when it quit.

Early Thru Mid 60s'
AHHH - the good old days! You met the nicest people on a Honda! Suzuki 250 Hustler - fastest production steet bike in the world (upper 12s'). BSA's - Triumph's - Yamaha's - Kawasaki's - lots of Vespa's & Rabbit's (Mitsubishi) - and of course the venerable Harley Davidson (AMF). At the time, drip pans & cardboard under the Harley showroom bikes was SOP! There were still a few Indians floating around here & there.
Always thought I would end up with an Indian! Got no wishes to any more!!

Funny that no one mentioned the old chain oilers. It was common practice to plug them off to stop the puddling. That started back in the day when a lot of roads weren't even paved.

I wonder what year was he in a Harley dealer, AMF sold out years ago. I have been working on Harley's for 38 years and thought that I have heard everything but this one takes the cake.
