Put Gerbings heated liners under the gear you have now and add a pair of their gloves.

Waterproof leather Harley FXRG pants, jacket, boots, and gauntlets. Pricey, but high quality, has armor, and you will never be wet or cold.

I use Duluth Trading Long Johns and they work great in combo with my Fox Creek Overpants.

I just heard about silk today- I'll look into that too..

How did they do it in the old days besides a Pall Mall and a bottle of Jack?

I have one of these http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...iece-Suit.aspx
Works "well enough" for short rides, or commutes (so long as you keep indoors when not in use)
They work well an conserving heat, but, don't generate heat. I've upgraded to Gerbings heated gear, and have been VERY happy... and very warm.
http://heatedclothingoutlet.com/index.shtml is Gerbing's "outlet"... if they have your size.. purchase from there, and then fill in your wardrobe from other sources.

Back in the '70's and '80's I wore a snowmobile suit, ski mask and gauntlet gloves. I looked like the Michelin man but I surely kept warm.
