San Francisco Police Department Considering Dumping Harley, Leasing Other Bikes
#21
That's kinda what I was thinking. I'm surprised they aren't puttering around on pink mopeds with little baskets on them in that area.

the BMW will out perform the H-D by far... and produce less heat run better on hot days... but, maintenance cost are still going too be high... oil change is a oil change doesn't matter what oil pan you draining it from... let one of them leos lay a BMW down and then see how much it is going to cost to fix it...

Well, look at almost ANY discussion on this forum about other kinds of bikes. When confronted with cheaper cost, more impressive engine performance, and better handling, the typical "Harley Fanatic" will counter with a statement something like "you don't buy a harley for performance, you buy a harley because it's a harley."
There's also an awful lot about the "harley mystique" and there being something you can't quantify.
Well, it is no surprise that the people who need to use a motorcycle for their work, especially very serious and potentially dangerous work, are not as swayed by these factors as the average consumer or harley fan is.
So, by our own admission, you don't buy a harley for the performance or handling, is it any surprise that some police departments sometimes consider bikes that you DO buy for performance and handling and all those other factors?
I think this is good. I hope this will push harley to give the police depts. something different from HD, and maybe that will trickle down (heh) to the consumer.
I'm all in favor of HD diversifying.

To the guy is Canada pissing and moaning aobut unions, go f@ck a moose.
To the guy from LA. that said an equal amount of drible, there's a reason your state is the toilet of the USA and it's not because we send all our garbage down the Mississippi, it's cause you people live in a swamp covered with oil rigs, fat people and Jamarcus Russell was yer college QB. Bon ton roulet dude.
Unions built this country, stopped child labor and ended danerous practices in the factories. Unions put this country back to work after the rich totally destroyed the economy in 1927 by stealing on Wall Street. Unions saw to it that people of color who came back from the killing fields of WW II got a fair shake at getting a decent job. You are either probably too young to know that, or a northern hillbilly who thinks hockey is actually worth watching.

Do all you anti-union guys really believe that Harley or any other companies would pass the savings on to you if they saved money by paying untrained idiots less money? Prices would not drop, profits would go up. Executives and stock holders would get the money instead of the working man.

A lot of departments send a couple of motor unit officers to school to learn service on the H.D. bikes and things like replacing clutches...tires...etc...As far as replacement parts go...Harley parts are a lot cheaper than metric parts...with a lot more options of after market replacement parts...After a couple of years I bet they will come back to Harley...The grass always looks greener on the other side....Could be because it gets more fertilizer...And we know what that is made of.
This is simply due to the fact the newer technology bikes are lighter, faster and handle better. They are also much easier to maintain. One example is that a shared sump motorcycle takes about 10 minutes to change the oil and only uses one lubricant and can run extended oil change intervals than a bike with 3 sumps. Ask anyone with a Vrod.
