harley davidson gift cards bad news

My .02 worth on HD gift cards, wifey gave me 2 of them for Christmas last year. Was in Canada for work in February, had a break and went to the HD shop in Winnipeg for a t-shirt. Whipped out the gift card and found out is was only valid in the US. The desk girl and me found small fine print on the cards front saying so after she ran it and it was declined. Still got the t-shirt!

I despise gift cards for the very reason listed below, pulled from web article.
"Erica Alini states in her June 30, 2009 Wall Street Journal article entitled Governments Grab Unused Gift Cards, that every year, consumers purchase approximately $65 billion in gift cards and some are never used. This has resulted in about $6.8 billion in unredeemed gift cards. Never expiring, many people like to purchase the cards and then use them at their convenience. Others like to give them as gifts on the holidays or for special occasions. However, some get lost or some never use them because consumers may not desire to shop at the store or may forget about them."

That's 6.8 Billion. 10 % of all of the gift card sales. I have this discussion with my wife all the time when she wants to give gift cards instead of cash, her logic being that the cash is "impersonal". Yet she has a drawer full of these gift cards others have given us and many we'll never use. You think we could re-gift them? Heck no, that would be "impersonal".

Well you are not trying very hard. I never buy gift cards. Just another PIA thing to keep track of. I'll give cash, they can spend it anywhere they want, and never expires.
