Default 1k mile service lubricant choice ?

When you take your bike in for service I see you have a choice between conv. or synthetic. Do they limit you to HD lubricants or will they put in what you request ( within reason ) ? Want to use M1 products in 2 of the 3 holes.

If you go to the dealer for routine maintenance then you should bring KY.

But seriously, tons of threads about oil on here with many differing opinions. You should do a search. I think most places will put in stuff you bring (if they don't sell it themselves) but you should call them first.

I'm pretty sure most dealerships only stock their brand of oil and other lubricants. However, they will put in whatever you want if you take it with you. Don't expect a price break though.

Just don't let them talk you into syn3. get a manual and do it yourself, so much cheaper.

Actually, Syn3 was only about 15 bucks more than their service with dino oil. And even then, they didn't charge me that. They wanted $300.00 for the service, + the synthetic fluids. They only charged me $307.00. And yes, I had them do it. With my spoke wheels, I wanted someone to do it with more knowledge than me. I haven't messed with spokes in years, and even then it was a PITA.

Thanks guys, I've researched it here & plan to use the M1 in the engine & tranny, the hd stuff in the 3rd. Just want to let them give the bike a once over then take over. Between the service manual & HDF I feel pretty comfortable.

I've found varying opinions on when to switch to synthetic from dino. From my research waiting to around 3K to switch might be a good idea which is what I did. Also, learn to do it youself next change, easy as pie.

I did not let the dealer do my 1K service. I had an indy do it. He is the former owner of the local HD dealership. He actually has a dealer # from Harley and has 2 HD certified HD techs and is one himself. He can sign my little owner manual and everything. Just can't do warranty work I don't think. I stuck with dino for the 1K. Got synthetic in the tranny without paying for syn. I will do the next one myself and use synthetic everywhere.

I did mine myself with M1 in all 3 holes. Mobil supports all 3 and as long as they do I figure they have enough cash to fix or replace the bike if something fails as a result of using their products in all 3 holes. Just my 2 cents.
