With all the talk about spilling oil when changing the filter, I thought I'd throw this out. I installed a oil cooler today on my new wide gilde. It hadn't been run in a week and I didn't spill a drop of oil when removing the filter. Is there any way to do this when changing the oil?

My best thought is to warm the bike up, drain the oil, then let sit a few hours to cool off and let all the oil drain from the filter mount, then change the filter. What do you all think?

Ps: I'll probably continue to change it all when hot, but thought it would be a good discussion.

 

My oil change trick is to pull the oil plug when the engine is warm, not hot and let the oil drain overnight. In the morning I remove the filter and really don't have much oil leakage from the filter at all.
Guessing that there are lots of tricks.

I've tried about every trick. The easiest is to drain it, fill it and then spray the heck out of it with brake cleaner.

 

I was actually thinking of that myself, with the oil filter adapter in place it's really hard not to make a damn mess taking the filter off.

 

Well, my current trick is to shove a rag under the filter, then the oil gets soaked up as it drips.

I'm liking the overnight thing, though!

 

I've drilled a hole next to the bottom of the oil filter before and let it drain out from there before removing the oil filer! less mess, Ialso put a rag under the oil filter to absorb and spillage..

 

I use carb cleaner

 

get creative with an empty bottle of soda and a box cutter. Make it so it fits under the filter flush. Pretty much almost cutting the bottle in half.

 

Simply green is your friend.
