Default 2001 a good year for TC 88?

THinking of going from a 2006 Street Bob to a 2001 Road king. Possibly going to get a RK for 9300. Want something with hard bags and something I can ride for hours on end.

Is 2001 a good year for TC 88s?

Thumbs up

Mine has been great. Although I did change to a S&S gear drive cam and 95" build at 15K, 41K and still going strong. Oh yeah, I love my Road King!

nope.....horrible year

all earlier tc 88's will need the cam tensioners replaced because Harley were jerks and didn't do a recall. I'll have to do it to my bike sometime in the future.
other than that, with some slight mods they make great power and are good motors.

you'll be fine

35,000 miles and hasn't missed a beat in the 2 years I've had it. Had 12,000 on it when I got it. I replace the primary chain tensioner and did a stage 1 on her. Strong running and dependable. My cam tensioners are still ok, but I will be changing them out this winter when I do a cam and oil pump upgrade. I have the MM EFI and it has been faultless, if anything did go with the EFI I would revert to a carb.

My .02 cents.

I have a 2000 Road King and she just chugs right along, Almost 70 K on her now. I am lucky enough to have a carbed on and I would not trade it for a new one. I have an 07 as well and I like the 2000 a million times better.

There has been a lot of talk about the 2001 fuel injection system. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a good 2001 if it was carbed but like the others stated. The cam chain tensioners are junk waiting to take out an oil pump which then takes out the engine.

As stated before..I would look for carbed and investigate the cam chain tensioners...they are the weakest link

Also on the + side I think the 01 have the better old style crank bearings, which are claimed to be better too.

I have a 2001 fuel injected and haven't had any problems. I put on Vance & Hines long shots and a K&N air filter. Runs great. I'll have to look into that cam chain tensioner issue but I should have a little time. My bike only has 10,000 miles on it. Bought it from a old guy that lost interest in riding after his wife died.

The good: Forged crank and left side Timkin crank bearing. If it has a carb great.
The bad: Known for bad cam bearings and you will need to watch the tensioners. I'd go gear drive cams. The fuel injection for that year sucks ***. Rear swing arms are weak and tend to break where the axle goes through.

If it were a carbed bike I would consider it but not for that price unless it's low miles and cherry.
