Clarksville Speedway Clarksville, Tenn.
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn.- Five people who gathered to help needy children are dead in what police are calling a tragic accident.
It happened at the 30th annual Toy Run and Party at the Clarksville Speedway. Police are still investigating, but early indications are that the victims likely died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The bodies have been sent to a medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.
A gas-powered generator appears to have been placed close to an external air vent on the trailer where the people died. Carbon monoxide gas from an engine is colorless, odorless and tasteless, but toxic.
Police quickly cordoned off the area at the Clarksville Speedway after someone made the grisly discovery inside a trailer just after noon.
Clarksville police spokesman Jim Knoll says three men and two women were found Sunday. Knoll says there was no sign of foul play. The bikers were attending a charity event sponsored by the group Bikers Who Care.
Bikers Who Care is a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who help support children's charities. Over the years, the group has donated well over one-million dollars to local charitable causes.
