Cam chain tensioner 2006 Street Glide
#21
Thanks guys! Not riding is killing me, especially today's beautious weather!!!
I have heard from some that with this new set up, may feel like a 103. This chick is looking forward to that!
And to be prepared that it will be louder.
As for mileage of these breaking down, I've heard as low as 23k and I've only been chatting for a few weeks. Must be an epidemic because L-A Harley in Maine is doing a special on "Cam chain tensioner inspections"! $25 rather than $105!!
Thanks for all the tips / feedback!

Cam Chain Tensioner
Im coming down with te same problem on my 06 FLSTC/I. Going to switch over to the grea drive as well. But need my bike back asap due to it being my daily way around. So for now im thinking of only changing out the front upper and lower guides. Anyone done this and not have any probles with it? Should order new parts and cams with gears come June.

For what it's worth... 2006 Street Glide. Just went to the SE hydraulic system at 41,000 miles because people on the forum had me so nervous about the original tensioners.
Both had identical wear, .029". Service manual says replace at .090" wear, so I could have gone a long time on the original tensioners.
Oh, and negatory on roller chains. Not on an '06.

I thought the 06 Dyna had the hydraulic tensioners already and the rest of the fleet got them in 07??? somebody else chime in...i may be wrong.

I'd certainly have the cam cover pulled immediately. Sounding funny may mean damage is occuring.
I have gear drive cams and at 81,000 miles I could certainly justify them. I ride 20,000 miles per year. I also have a 2000 model with the Timken Lefty bearing in mine which made the gear drive set up a no brainer for me.
In your case though, your motor is relatively young and Harley's Hydraulic tensioner kit with the new oil pump is equally a no brainer for your bike IMO. It simply gives you a longer lasting tensioner system and just like before, you can add cams at a later time at your discretion.

At around 28k I did the hydraulic tensioner kit w/oil pump and added the 204 cams (since she was open anyway, saved a few bucks compared to doing is later). Also did the Stage 1 and slipons at the same time, so the dyno was with all new stuff. Runs great and got a little extra zip.

Check the crank runout while you're in there too. I thought I had the same problem, but when I got in there the chain and shoes were fine. The cam support plate and oil pump were wearing on one side due to excessive runout.

I have a 2006 classic that I bought used from a dealer in Tennessee last year with26k on it. It ran great for 8k then I started to occasionally hear a slight slapping sound like the primary chain was loose. Then the oil pressure started to drop at idle. Within 1 k the engine was toast. A rod bearing seized up and bits of it went all through the engine. My advice (and my HD master tech who replaced my engine) is to change out the cam tensioner plate with the screamin' eagle hydraulic cam tensioner. it is available from any HD Dealer. I went ahead and had a new 95 c.i. screamin eagle (phase 2) kit put in my new 88 inch engine. I REALLY am proud of the performance upgrade it made. I just got the engine broken in last week so I can't comment on how dependable it will be but so far everything is great.
