What if you don't wear a helmet, what would work then?
Out here in South Dakota we give the palm side down like dribiling a basketball which means slow down... as if does in other places too, I'm sure or at least I remember that from my MSRP many years ago..

Actually the head tap has an entirely different meaning for me...it either means my helmet needs adjusted forward or backward, or I have decided to put the visor up or down (the slider and release are on top )

OK I'm in, for now on I will tap the top of my head if I gotta pee, or if the po po is ahead or maybe to say ur head light is out....just saying slow down and let me pee before you get a ticket for a burned out light.

Ive always heard of the "pat your helmet" gesture but never really seen anyone use it around here. I think I would just assume the guy is adjusting his helmet. I usually see oncoming riders use their left hand extended out while they are doing the "pushing down" motion to warn you to slow down for whatever is up ahead.
