You are assuming that it is always reckless & endangering "the oncoming driver".
The pro-pass school is saying that is not always the case.
If I'm wedged between a Winnebago & a tailgater bouncing their hood, I'll pass when it is safe to be safer.

Double yellows are almost always on blind hilltops and blind curves. It's not so much that it's "wrong" as it is an incredibly risky thing to do. I have no interest in meeting a truck head on at passing speed.

Yeah, OK, I have to admit to doing that on back country roads where the whole space I would need to pass was visible.

If I've got the room to get around that 10mph tractor in front of me I'm gonna go for it

sometimes its safer to pass and get out of the mayhem of bad drivers than it is to slow down and let everyone else get far out ahead.

i even once dealt with someone in the far left lane brake to take a right turn. no one was coming my way so i went over the line to get out of that accident waiting to happen

No sh*t. But passing on a DY with limited sight distance is a stupid move. Plus, those 2 just plain don't know how to ride. Deals Gap, where this video was filmed, used to be 55 mph speed limit the whole way. I don't know how I survived riding my sportbike there back when that was the speed limit. There are plenty of places that used to be passing zones that have been changed to no passing zones where you have plenty of room and sight line to pass safely on a motorcycle.
Of course, I'm sure all you guys think that the "nanny state" knows what's best for you in all situations?

Don't know if this differs by state, but here in NE it's illegal...directly from DMV manual:

Double Yellow
Double solid yellow lines mark the center of the road and separate oncoming
traffic. Passing is not allowed in either direction. Making a left turn is the
only lawful crossing allowed over double yellow lines, when turning into or
from an alley, private road, or driveway unless otherwise prohibited by signs.

There is no question that it's illegal. The question is whether or not it is safe to do so. It is illegal to speed, but it's not necessarily unsafe to do it. Sometimes it may even be safer.
