HID headlight, anti-lock brakes, cruise control, and saddlebags are also perfectly legal.
"Because you will pay extra for it."
You're dealing with a very large, very well run company.

Harley is more a clothing and accessory shop now
Just look at the dealers and their "boutiques"
You see more gay little Bloomingdale type mini shopping bags coming out of the dealer then parts or bikes
Cant get chrome on your forks but there are 20 leather jackets to choose from
Dont stock service manuals but you can get a hot pink Harley baseball cap
And the list goes on and on

I posted this on the "what you hate about your bagger" post:
At some point people begin to question what they get for their money. For each person it's a different amount. Most of us are not going to pay $50,000 for a badly made H-D that's slow regardless of how much being a member of the family means.
Each time they provide just a little less and charge a little more, a few riders buy a BMW, a Ducati, a Victory, a Custom, a Triumph or (worst case) a Metric. There are options out there.
When a company tries to live on reputation, not product, tries to milk every $ it can in accessories, some riders will buy a 2nd bike that's not an H-D. Or their 3rd.
You are right - it's supply and demand. And every time it costs more to get the kind of Harley you want, it lessens the demand and makes the Victory, which may not say Harley on the side, but has similar looks and perhaps better performance, be just a little bit more of a better deal in some buyers eyes...

i can't believe no one picked up on this...
yeah, i have one but....................doesn't ANYTHING that comes from a factory come under the category of "cookie cutter". yeah, i ride one as as much as i would LOVE to build one in the garage (which i CAN'T), i'm still ok with knowing that someone out there has one almost exactly like mine.
maybe i shouldn't have emailed that guy more pics of my flame job........................................!?

Sure, HD could throw a stage 1 upgrade onto all the bikes but then they would all be "cookie cutter" bikes.

Come on folks what do ya think? Believe it or not, people from the Moco may actually pay attention. They run that company very well - but it doesn't mean that what they are doing is right. Their customers always have the right to pipe in and tell them what they think. I know they need to make a profit. I also believe we, the consumer, have the right to get reasonable value for out money..

I'm happy with how mine came.
If it had factory stage-1 i'd change it anyhow most likely to pipes that I wanted.
I got the wheels I wanted (profile laced).
Might come with a longer powertrain warranty, but it's still unlimited mileage so I guess its ok.
I for one don't want to pay more for stuff I'm going to change anyhow. Pipes, grips, seat (maybe), pegs, etc...
I'd rather it came with the cheapest of that stuff so I can replace it without wasting money.

Hmmm, hamburger, fries & drink. What the hell, for 50 cents more I can super size it, Then why arn't all meals supersized to begin with?[:-]

Why don't Harley's come with a louder exhaust, different bars, the paint CAN'T be the best there is, it should have nicer wheels.........and personally I think each bike should come with your own personal bikerbabe (hair color and breast size optional).
Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzz, it's a factory built motorcycle, if you want a custom one, go find one of those "15 minute in the spotlight builders" off the Discovery channel.
I like all brands of bikes and refuse to knock anyones ride, but here are some things that Harley does, that no one else is doing
Harley gives you a 6 speed on all there full size bikes, no one else does
Harley gives you a 2 year warranty, no one else does
Harley gives you thousands of customizing options, no one else does

RE: Is the Moco Giving us Enough on a New Scoot?
The six speed is recent. Others have been offering it for years. In fact it's a good example of something that had to be added for some 15 years from the aftermarket that Harley could have offered years before.
We're not talking about the custom bits. I'm talking about buying the base bike. Why should a Triumph Speed Triple have so much more power than an H-D?
There's a guy in another post who is saying he could have bought the Triple instead of his Bob. Harley would have him locked in, and most guys who bought Triumph Rocket III's if they offered more power (not like the 96, I'm talkin 11 second power...)
