I have the Kury set up that flashes the brake lights a few times before staying on on my newer bike. My buddies all said it was very confusing and they couldn't tell what I was wanting to do so I disabled it. Still have all the LEDs and the turn signals are the brake lights and all but no flash.

Check out Hyperlites brake lights. They are LED modules (8 or 16) that affix on brackets alongside your license plate. There are several flash patterns to choose from. My set gives you the option of the first 5 seconds of strobe followed by a steady bright light (the California option) or a steady pulsing strobe. You change it by cutting one wire when installing them. They cost about $85, are very effective and do not detract from the appearance of the bike.
Another option to the headlight modulation is a set of Motolights mounted to the front forks on the brake caliper bolts. This creates what's called the "light triangle" and increases the distance a motorcycle can be seen by a motorist, and more importantly heightens their awareness of the rate of closure between the motorcycle and the car. We have studies documenting this in motorcycle accident reconstuction, so I'm not blowing smoke here. I installed the Motolights on my Ultra after seeing this study, and use them as DRL's. Using your passing lamps or "fog lamps" creates the "one big headlight" appearance to motorists and does little to draw their attention the way a headlight modulator or a light triangle with Motolights would.

Better to have some safety gear that a few consider "obnoxious" than get waffled or splattered by an inattentive driver.

No modulator, but my brake light flasher is usually my right hand. Or if I'm on the highway and hit a traffic jam out of nowhere, I just hit my emergency flashers until 5 or 6 buffer cars are slowed down or stopped behind me.

There was a thread on here a while ago where a guy got KILLED because of his headlight modulator.
If I recall correctly, an elderly driver in the on coming lane got confused with the blinking light coming at him. Maybe he thought it was an emergency vehicle. So he stopped in his lane. He was rear ended by traffic coming behind him. The ensuing carnage took out the bike, the one with the modulator killing the rider.
Personally I don't think they're a good thing. I don't belive they make you any more visible, but cause an annoyance that causes more problems than not.
