Default Battery Tender and Power Outage

Just had a half hour power outage and it made me wonder if a battery tender should be disconnected from the battery. Don't know if it will begin to discharge the battery or if there is a protection circuit to prevent power drain if the electricity goes off. Just to be safe I disconnected the tender.

I'd think that the power wouldn't be out long enough to even worry about it.

If they do drain, which I am not sure they do/would. Only during really bad ones, like a winter ice storm where U could loose power for days, Then maybe I'd unplug it.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it. I don't even run a battery tender.

In the middle of the winter I'll plop a trickle charger on my bike battery and boat battery for a night..and then disconnect it the next day (so literally just overnight). And then say...a week before the "end of winter"...I'll do it again.

Never had battery issues this way, always been just fine.

My bikes are on the tenders 24/7 if I ain't ridin'. Sometimes, if I go away, I turn off the power to the tenders but leave 'em plugged in. Never a problem.

Thanks dickey. Must be circuitry in there to prevent battery drain if the tender is unplugged.

You could try plugging something 12 volts into a light socket and see if it works. That way you'd know if you were backfeeding into your home wiring.

From Deltran's (Battery Tender) Website:

"If the battery is fully charged, then the Battery Tender Plus battery charger’s green light will be on. Once the AC power is removed from the Battery Tender Plus battery charger, the green light will go out and the charger not have any effect on the battery. The Battery Tender Plus battery charger is protected from reverse current, so it will not discharge the battery."

Note: This may or may not apply to other brands of Float Chargers.
