Banning Loud Pipes?

We motorcyclists are at a great disadvatage every second we are on the road. We ride without a shell, and we are smaller and less visible; one of the things that makes us stand out and be noticed on the road is the fact that drivers can hear us even before they can see us, that is a factor that greatly enhances our ability to survive the roads. This lagistation will take one of the few if not the only true working advantage that we have on the road and unfortunately people will pay with their life for this. Perhaps we should target the riders that inresponsibly reve up their bikes in areas were people reside. We all know that everybody has rights and everybody has the right not to be waken in the midle of the night by an inresponsible riders, but I think riders also have the right to add to their bikes any thing that keeps them safer on the road. You have rights, I have rights; but your rights end were mine begin and viseversa. The bottom line is that LOUD PIPES DO SAVE LIVES and that should out weigh any argument out there.

I have no problem with limiting the noise level as long as it is a REASONABLE level. Did you guys read what they are deeming acceptable? a STOCK Harley. Yes a STOCK Harley that you cannot even hear running puts out 80db. The new law is stating 86db is the max. THAT I have a problem with! Car stereos are limited to 125db @ 100' Why should we be no different?

Personally I think it's more appearance than noise...
Unfortunately with some knuckleheads, you have to substitute legislation for good sense and common courtesy. The "loud pipes" road warriors have been giving the rest of us a bad name for years and the public is fed up with having all the car alarms go off in their neighborhood when a loud bike comes through. I can enjoy the ride without the deafening sound, and my self-esteem is not harmed in the least by stock pipes. If I really needed the extra power, I would have purchased a more powerful machine up front.
There are people in this world who have no lives other than to make someone else miserable and politicians that look for stuff like this with which to bolster their vote numbers. We had some putz in Florida that wanted to make the plastic bull parts illegal on the backs of cars, fortunately he was shut down. They also tried to make inappropriate bumper stickers illegal down here...that one got passed but was challenged within days as a free speech violation. If I'm not mistaken one of the issues used in the stereo noise ordinances that were struck down was also free speech.
I've known a lot of bikers and many that look like they could beat down a semi all on their own are some of the nicest most respectful people you could ever meet (and are usually covered in tats with long hair and club vests). It's the combo of the long hair the tats and the harley that get peeps all afeared. My friend experienced this, he had an old toe cutter ninja that broke down he said peeps were always screwing with him on the road, he borrowed my 97 sporty for a ride to orlando and no one messed with him the whole way..they saw the long hair, the tats and the harley and gave him a wide berth. Bikers have rights too and we can't be singled out any more than someone from the middle east can be singled out for harassment.
EPA stickers maybe but I can't see any law that prohibits people from buying after market exhausts standing any legal test. The companies that sell those products, vance and hines, etc., need to be in there filing their lawsuits the day after something like that is passed, especially in a big state like Cali where their bottom line may get hit fairly hard.

The problem with this whole discussion is that the legislation is not about safety or health, or any other issue. This is about a few people who just "don't like" loud pipes. It is politicians pandering to one group that ends up affecting everyone. It's a smaller scale, but still similar to prohibition in the 20's. 10% of adult drinkers are alcoholics, but due to pressure from "Christian Morality" groups, 100% of the population had to bend over and succumb to their ideology. The only new law that needs to be passed is an amendment to the constitution stating that no law shall be passed for the simple reason that a group "doesn't like" something. This is a waste of time, money, and effort by the government...state an potentially federal. There are a lot more pressing issues in this country than, "that noise bothers me." People having loud pipes is no more a "me" mentality than those who want them banned. Why not focus on keeping pedeophiles locked up longer, or making it illegal for politicians to vote in their own pay raises and getting a full retirement for serving one term, or politicians being immune to laws that they impose on the people? Talk about wasting tax dollars. We have to pay for the healthcare and children's education of individuals who supposedly served us (actually themselves) for 2-4 years. While we're at it, let's have a flat income tax rate across the board. If I pay 20-25% on my income taxes, why shouldn't Bill Gates pay the same %? We are definitely a country with a government by, and for the government. Outlaw the lobbyists while we're at it too. The only lobbyists that matter are the American people. If a federal law needs to be passed, put it on a ballot and let "we the people" make the call. F#^k political party agendas... They are all corrupt and self-serving. All of the (2) ***** Parties that we have to choose from. And for the record, they are both ****!

Loud pipes
Here we go again. Land of the free my a**. How about an ordinance against loud car stereos. I have heard many stories of people who didn't see a bike but heard it and avoided an accident. We do need legislature regarding higher fines to those who hit bikers with there car. This is another example of the gov't controlling our lives. They don't care if there are no jobs as long as they can figure another way to attain revenues for themselves. I am now a shut- in I only leave the house to go to work because I'm afraid I'll be pulled over for some bull*** I can't afford to defend. America as I knew it is dead.

I'm sorry I don't buy in to the loud pipes save lives as a rule. Ever been in a car with a radio on and not heard that fire truck or Police cruiser behind you or coming into an intersection. There is a certain element that uses loud to seek attention, and not for the sake of safety, but look at me attention. I will add, I truly enjoy the Sound of most aftermarket Pipes vs Stock... but there comes a loudness point.
As for our lawmakers, I personally am going to drop a note to mine politely stating that there are more urgent concerns to spend time on in America than motorcycle mufflers.
That's my .02

Another NOISE thread... I did not read all 52 pages of this BS, so if I am repeating what anyone else said - please forgive me. Nobody on a bike should ever be ticketed because his bike "has the ability to make a lot of noise". Every truck on the road has "the ability to make tons of noise". If I am "actually making noise above the legal standard - fine - give me a ticket. But then the community better apply the same standards about noise to all the landscapers with their weed whackers and lawn mowers. Noise is noise. Why is it BAD when it comes from a motorcycle and acceptable when it comes from a truck, a goofball's sterio, a lawn mower, or anything else. If noise is the problem, then legislate the amount of noise that is permissable. Don't single out one sourse of noise and legislate against that. Okay - I am off the soap-box now.

Loud Pipes
I can understand the concerns, but I do feel the motorcycles are being singled out, as there are lots of vehicles in my neighborhood that exceed the level as well. I wish they would enforce a curfew after 11:00 pm, and I think this would satisfy alot of the concerned. Just my thoughts
