I have straight pipes on one, and 2 into 1 on the other. It is definately about respect for others. I have been tailed by on several ocassions by cops while riding thru towns and have yet to ever be pulled over in nearly 4 years of using these pipes. But if they change the law as stated then they no longer have to wait for a bike to actually get outta line, they will be able to write you a ticket just because your equipment has the capabilty to offend. Denver has had this type of law for awhile now, and so far I don't think that city is any quieter overall as a city than anywhere else. It will be a money maker for most municipalities just because they can. Loud pipes don't make me any safer as a rider, but they also don't pose any saftey risk to others, so all you folks that don't "LIKE" loud pipes should live and let live and quit trying to impose your "LIKES" or "DISLIKES" on the rest of us.

I must be missing something...
Yes you are - they were 'race pipes' but loads of riders used them on roads and authorities were far less likely to object. But the same pipes are now viewed differently - all I'm trying to say is you can't expect us to throw out our old stuff because you've changed your mind about whether we should have been allowed to have them in the first place. Do you think Harley sold them in huge numbers expecting them to be used on race tracks only?

Then the noise police came along and we had to have mufflers on them. Then, that was not enough, we had to have them meet a certain db level. Now many are going to electric motors to get away from the noise restrictions.

I can tell you that a semi with a jake brake will drown out my drag pipes any day of the week.
One factor not mentioned often is that population density has increased a lot in most areas -- certainly in my area, where 20 yrs ago my nearest neighbor was about 1/2-mile away and now there are houses within 100 yds on all sides. Noise ordinances are getting more teeth and more enforcement. Personally, I'm OK with that.

There's an acquaintance nearby (don't consider him a friend, since he's really an arrogant jerk) who has a race car. He routinely worked on the car at all hours of the night until the neighbors called the cops several times about the roaring engine noise. Last I heard he'd been told that if another complaint is lodged he would be arrested; IMO, he should have been hauled in long ago.

As for jake braking, there are signs posted all around here prohibiting that -- and it is enforced.

I could give a rat's nats one way or the other. I do have an objection to sound ordinances not being equally enforced.

Exhausts are exhausts, but the people who sit at intersections with their music so loud I can't hear myself think are just as bad if not worse. Problem is, the music can be turned down before the LEO actually writes the ticket... even they would.

But for you libtards who keep bitching and trying to push your agendas down people's throats whatever it may be...is ignorant and self serving...
What's ignorant and self serving is thinking that "freedom" means being able to do whatever you want on the roads paid for by the public with no regard for that public.

Are you gonna die from hearing a loud exhaust ? "No your not"...
Before you call anyone "tard" again, you should make sure you have completed the fourth grade. That's where children learn that "you are" is contracted into "you're."

We live in a society. You reap the benefits of that society every day: protection, wealth, infrastructure, clean water, air, advanced medicine, safe and reliable food. So unless you want to forgo those things and buy yourself some acreage in the middle of the woods and not use the public roads, or enjoy the security our military and police force provide you, or drink public water, or use the medicines developed within our infrastructure, or eat anything FDA approved and inspected and handled according to FDA guidelines, you should stop crying that people passed a law against obnoxious and unnecessarily pipes.

Glad I disagree with cameraboy again. The bellwether I set my standards from. Noise is noise and people will always complain about something they don't like anyway. People dislike things that are different then what they consider their norm. I have no doubt that a lot of people view motorcycles with disdain. We are different. We represent things like individuality, nonconformity, and adventure. I have seen the looks and they run the gamut. Everything from envy to fear. They will never stop attacking the riding community. If the exhaust on either one of my Harley's bothers you can stick you fingers in your ears cause I really don't care you can't do anything about it anyway. I will either skirt or ignore a law that I don't like. Stupid laws that are generally disobeyed teach disrespect for law.

wait, so I understand you, because "noise is noise" people should NOT be annoyed by your loud toy thundering around the neighborhood?

And it's because it's "different," not loud and a disturbance to the peace?

That's not what people don't like. They dislike douchebaggery like loud pipes for no reason other than it makes ONE person feel good and disturbs everyone else.

And that's the wonderful douchebag attitude that's going to get these laws enacted, enforced, and THEN tightened so that ALL of us are going to be limited. Thanks. But as long as YOU are happy, that's all that matters, right?

That's it...way to contribute to the problem and bring the laws down that will dictate all exhausts make Harleys sound like Goldwing sewing machines by the year 2015! Yay for you!!!

I'm amazed at how the concept of "just go easy with your right wrist through certain areas like nice neighborhoods and downtown area" seems to zoom right over the head of some people. Criminy...my 8 year old daughter can even grasp the concept!!! But I guess some people just gotta get that "look at me...look at meeeeee!" feeling when they run through downtown areas. They'll be doing the speed of ZERO at a stoplight..yet for some reason (well, OK, the reason is ATTENTION GETTING) gotta rev their engines to get people to cringe and stare at them. Yup....daddy didn't give them their little red wagon for XMas one year and it's apparently given them some complex that surfaced in a negative manner in their adult years.

It seems there needs to be a difference between loud and nuisance. If loud pipes/stereos/trucks/etc go by my house, big deal, they are gone in seconds and I get on with my life. If some jack off revs his car/bike or cranks his stereo all day or night, then I have a problem. I have a neighbor who likes fire works and sets some off every now and then on a Friday or Saturday night. It scares my dog and is slightly annoying but I can deal with a few minutes of noise. Other than that he doesn't bother me at all.

What you worried about? Being associated with douche bag bikers or everyone else's Harley sounding like your Honda? Noise complaints are just a rally points for people who don't like motorcycles to use to make us all conform. Your must be their poster boy of conformity.
