Tractor-trailers louder then bikes
It shouldn't be confusing if you actually got it right what "many on here" think. There's a difference between thinking it a right to run loud pipes and thinking there are better ways to quiet such folks down than to sic government force on their collective backside.
And the reason that some of us have taken note of your out-of-country location is because the overwhelming majority of us only know about, or have interest in, the laws concerning noise or helmets in the US, and it is legal issues being discussed here for the most part. I don't think any mention of Canada has been intended as derisive (well, maybe the last one was), just as not really applicable to whatever was being discussed when you made whatever comment you made.
I only live on five acres down here in Dixie, and the highway is about half a mile away, but the tractor-trailers are WAY louder than any bike, or even any group of bikes, I've ever heard going by on it. I never hear either one if I'm inside. Only when I'm sittin' on the porch swing sippin' a mint julep do I hear them. In either case, truck or bike, the sound always brings a grin to my face because I know someone's either having some fun or makin' some money. I don't want government restricting either activity, even though the pipes I run are pretty darned quiet compared to the ones I can hear on the highway. I would feel the same way if my house was sitting just off the highway's shoulder.
For some unknown reason, at least one person on here thinks it is their right to sic government on others who don't share their over-sensitivity to semi-loud noises, anytime they want.

No, they're not using jake breaks, but yes indeed, they are WAY louder than the bikes. I am not above the highway though. I'm in a creek bed holler. My road comes off the highway right before the bridge that goes over the creek. There's a hill on both sides of the bridge, so that may account for the higher levels of truck noise because no matter which direction they're traveling, they have to floor it as soon as they hit the bridge to get up the hill on the other side. Being at the bottom of the holler may "funnel" the noise right to us, I don't know. You might hear the bikes grab a small handful at the same place(s) on the bridge, but they usually don't open it up wide like the trucks do. Besides that though, most of the trucks out here are logging trucks or haulin' cotton, corn or other crops to market. A lot of the noise is not associated with engine or exhaust, it's just old trucks with whiny transmissions and drive axles, maybe a chain floppin' around against the steel U-shaped log holders - whatever - but they're LOUD. That is not a complaint, just capitalized for emphasis.

I'll start by saying I don't like obnoxiously loud pipes. What no one is addressing is the level of loud. Harleys right off the showroom floor are loud. Then there are extra loud pipes like Rhineharts, Rush etc. Then come the obnoxiously loud pipes called straight pipes.
Then there is the application of said exhausts. Most riders are considerate with when and how they open the pipes up. Then there are the morons that peg the throttle under every bridge and blip the throttle at every stop sign and light. Those are what non riders complain about and THEY have the ear of the politicians.
I personally don't think loud pipes save lives. If loud exhaust did, no one would ever get into an accident with a cop car, ambulance or fire truck. Drivers inside their cage with the AC/heater on high and the stereo blasting away while yapping on a cell phone will NOT hear any loud motorcycle.
I've said before on another thread that I think lights and bright colored clothes save more lives then sound. If you do hear something, you really don't know where the sound is coming from, it could be 2 or 3 lanes away or next to you or in back of you, but you CAN SEE where light is coming from.
I love the argument about loud music being just as bad as loud pipes.....NOPE. Not even close. I have yet to see/hear someone playing loud music with their windows OPEN. They are usually closed so they don't dilute their music with outside noise.
Of course there are exceptions to everything. I'm just giving my experiences and thoughts. I'm sure there are many that will disagree with me and many that will agree with me. It's all about the level of irritating sound that we have to put up with. And everyone has different levels. The ones that are considerate I and others have no problems with. The morons that think they are the only one that has a right to infringe upon and annoy others are the ones that will eventually screw it up for all the rest of us.
In my own experience, in over 55 years of riding, I have never once had to rely on a loud exhaust to save my life. Lucky? = Maybe. Skill and knowing how to ride = probably.
I would like to read some examples of how your loud exhaust saved your life. Anyone care to share?

Helmets and loud pipes.... for Helmets it's a non-issue up here, we have no choice BUT whenever I am riding through a State where I can take it off, I do. I'm 60 yrs old, I recognize that I might be at more risk of injury in the event of an accident, but as an adult it's my choice. (don't mean to hihack the thread, just wanted to touch upon free choice)
Loud pipes? The first thing I always do is ditch the stock exhaust. I enjoy and appreciate the sound of a Harley with a nice deep rumble, and again it's my choice. Open drag pipes are another animal altogether.
We do have our very own version of Ricky Holtsclaw up here. He has a hard on for bikes and hot rods. He will do a U turn just to bust your *****. We had a charity ride and at the end of it, the douche (who was part of the Police escort) went around to all the parked bikes and ticketed the ones that did not have stock pipes. No stick, no sound meter, nada. If it wasn't stamped 80db he nailed you.
Needless to say, participation dropped off the next year. The guy is still out there and getting a little more famous (infamous) and like our friend Ricky when given enough rope will eventually hang himself.
