I have never locked mine. I hang it from the right hand grip.

I use a cable bike lock but really only lock it up if I am going to be away from my bike for a long period of time (hours). And usually at that point I am sliding the cable through my jacket sleeve also to lock that up. Nothing that a true criminal couldn't crack but I put nothing past mischievous teens.

I usually take it with me. If that is not possible I hang it on the bars. I'm more concerned about someone lifting it just to be an ***, not for the monetary value they'd gain. Then what do you do if you are are out and have no helmet to legally ride?

I leave my half-helmets on the seat. Take 'em!
My Arai and Shoei full-face, I carry in the helmet bag (if I'm at a Harley bar). If I'm at the race track, I leave them by my front wheel.
But everyone knows its bad form, bad karma and bad hygiene to steal another guy's helmet.

I use the retractible cable type lock. Same as you might use with your skis. It won't stop a serious thief but it prevents the casual guy from walking away with your stuff. I thread it through a jacket sleeve, around the chin bar on my helmet and through the backrest. Keeps everything nice and safe. Never had a problem.

Thanks for the helpful replys. I'll use one of the cable gun-locks I have laying around the house, for the hat. May have to get something else for my jacket. I appreciate the help, thanks

I use one of these for my high dollar DOT failing ACC helmet – I clip it to a throttle cable and hope nobody is hard up enough to cut the cable:

Been hot enough around here lately that you can almost wring out the padding inside my 3/4 $125 HJC. I just hang it on the bar. If someone wants to touch that thing, more power to 'em.

As for the legalities, We're not a helmet required state and I have a spare pair of goggles in my saddlebag.
