I have done lots of research on this, as my wife insisted I wear something.

I have a small head, so this has been even more difficult for me. I first tried to find a DOT half helmet, not happening for someone that wears a xs\s, they all look terrible and fit terrible. I came across ACC several years ago and bought one of there half helmets and love it, although the DOT cert has been pulled from them. I actually just ordered another extended half shell in chrome from them just the other day (Composite Craft now). It is not your typical novelty, the shell is made of carbon fiber and kevlar , and I think initially intended for white water rafting (I think they bash there heads on rocks sometimes). Anyway, i have seen pics of several ACC helmets that have been trhough wrecks and saved people. I know it is not DOT, but is is a lot safer than some $40 novelty where the shell will just break.

I also have a Daytona 3/4, it is about the smallest, along with Lick's NovDot (they both use 3-4 different shell sizes) A lot of the cheaper helmets will be one shell size and just stuffed with extra padding.

As for FF, just recently picked up a new Bell Arrow. It is pretty light, comfortable and I think I like it so far, although I have not been on the road with it yet. I would like to try and get used to it, looks like it would protect the melon pretty well in case anything happened. Bell and some of the other better FF helnets use more than one shell size.

You can find out a ton of info about helmets on this site (they sometimes have differnt shells used at the bottom of the review).

It's a large, non DOT that I bought on Ebay about 7 years ago. From http://stores.ebay.com/JPhelmet-Expr...d=p4634.c0.m14 . He used to have tons of styles but only carries a few now. Still a couple of cool ones.
