Default Use an oil scavenger ..... or not.

Scavenge 1 quart of nasty oil out of your motor ..... or leave it in.

If you change the oil and filter regularly, it shouldn't hurt. I've got 108,000 miles on my Sportie and never used a scavenger.

I would dispute that 1 quart is left in the motor through the regular draining process.

On my 2010 Ultra I have done the 1,5,10 and 15K services. Each and every time when I refilled them, it took exactly 3 and one half quarts of oil. After the test ride when the motor was hot, the oil on the dip stick was exactly on the full line.

If it started with a quart still in it, that sucker would be way over full.

The same thing with my 07 FXSTC, 10 Dyna SG, 09 XR1200 and 08 Buell Ulysses XT all only show right at the full mark after a change and the correct amount of oil added.

This claim of one quart left by draining is a huge pile of BULL CRAP!!!

Using the scavenger that's what came out.

Drain oil and remove old filter. Install filter scavenger puck. Put 3 quarts of oil in tank. Remove return line from oil tank and install clear line.

Put other end of clear line in an empty gallon milk jug. I marked the jug at 28, 30, 32 oz. Crank motor and run until oil going into milk jug looks clean. The level was at the 32 oz mark when I stopped the motor.

Guess I needed to post a pic of the milk jug! lol

The oil scavenger makers only claim "up to" 16 ounces...that is half a quart. All motors retain some dirty oil. Total waste of time if you change your oil regularly...84 Evo with 250k and no major rebuilt .

Question: doesn't using the scavenger defeat the purpose of us pre-filling our new oil filter?

I use it. I generally get about 20 ounces of pure contaminated oil into the jug before the flow begins to lighten up. I shut down at about 28 ounces. I don't think that it is absolutely necessary to use the scavenger, but I do see alot of contaminated oil purged when I use it. I'm certain it is doing more good than harm. It also allows me to extend my oil change interval significantly.

I would not worry about unless you go way over the recommended service.

And you don't think that the new oil is mixing with the old oil as it is being forced out of the engine? There is no way that a quart of oil is left in the engine after draining.

I made my own after reading a thread on here. Cost me about $12. Works great!
