Besides the use of a helmet should not be dictated by the state, it should be personal choice, and as I discussed in another topic, DOT standards are total bullshit and outdated, there are a few so called novelty helmets on the market that in my opinion are far superior to many DOT rated lids....
This country was founded on freedom of choice and taking personal responsibility for one's self, unfortunately lawyers and politicians have destroyed that concept.
I live in a state that does not respect my 2nd Amendment rights, are you saying I should abide by those draconian gun laws and live in fear of criminals, rapists, car jackers, and home invaders, or do I exercise my God given rights to self protection.....there's more than one way of looking at things......

I am curious why they had to tow, why not allow you to go get a DOT helmet? or call someone to bring you one? That is bullshit, someone should setup shop at those checkpoints selling DOT helmets.

I can see both sides of the coin:

The law is in place and the police have a duty to uphold the law. The motorcyclists that broke the law do not have a legitimate b1tch. They knew what they were doing, made a choice and got caught. Play the game, you pay the price.

However. Is the road block the highest and best use of the policmen's time and Police Department headcount? Clearly not. There are much more pressing responsibilities and much more important crimes that need addressed. Frankly, it is close to a total waste of salaries and law enforcement man-hours.

In the end it is balanced. A total waste of law enforcement time and salaries. And, a total waste of hard earned money that will be paid in fines by the guys that got caught.

I wonder if the cops can tell what a legal helmet is without the help of the DOT sticker. I mean the reality is that it comes down to a 6 cent sticker not safety

Goddamn greedy, nanny government. They come down like Moses from the mountain to proclaim that we, the incompetent citizen, unable to make our own choices, must protect ourselves with a helmet that they, our wise and protective masters, have deemed safe with their little sticker.

What's next? Government inspectors in our bedrooms, determining if we are practicing safe sex with government approved condoms?

Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves.

I know everybody has an opinion on helmets and whether we should wear one or not but this is an incorrect statement. In my opinion, it's not the state's responsibility to teach us the safety aspects of helmet use. How many times have you pointed a gun at yourself or walked out in front of car, either one just for the hell of it? Did the state teach you not to do those things?
I agree it should be a matter of choice to wear one or not. But it's not the fault of the police that those few who use an unapproved helmet get cited or have their bikes towed. They didn't obey the law and they got caught. Pretty simple to me.
If we choose to get involved in a hobby, sport or activity, I don't believe it's the state's responsibility to teach us the safety aspects of it. Take the initiative and personal responsibility to educate yourself on whatever the hobby is and don't blame the police when you get caught breaking the law. Just my $.02.
Ride Safe
i believe the motorcycle education that surfguitar is referring to is educating the non riding public about motorcycles. anyone who rides already knows that wearing a helmet is safer than not (even though we want the choice, not the mandate).

the real bullshit aspect of this is the fact that it was a 'motorcycle only' checkpoint. there are already so many rules on the books that prohibit certain actions, but the leos are not allowed to just pull someone over and check without there being some other infraction involved (ie checking someone's immigration status is not allowed unless they are pulled over for a busted taillight, etc). the motorcycle only checkpoint allows law enforcement carte blanche to go on a fishing expedition to find anything they possibly can.

If you don't ride with the basic safety equipment consisting of: DOT approved helmet, protective eyewear, gloves, long pants, and over the ankle boots....you are a dumbass. Government studies have determined that too many riders are dumbasses, and your elected representatives have enacted a law that states you need to protect your brain with a helmet that meets minimum safety standards. If those officers got even one person to wear a DOT approved helmet in the future, and it ends up saving their lives, I say it was money well spent. It's my opinion that a MSF course should be mandatory before anyone gets their motorcycle endorsement.

I understand you want to be a rebel, whine about the right to be a dumbass, and maybe even use it as an excuse to whine about "illegals". There are many laws you may not agree with. This is a republic, and if you don't like a law then elect someone to change it. Otherwise, quit whining, its unbecoming.

A fine example of societies refusal to take resonsibility for ones own actions.
Or disagreement with the nanny-state laws of one of the least free states in America. (Third most oppressive state government in the U.S. according to "Freedom In the 50 States: An Index of Personal And Economic Freedom").

Well dumbass, I do believe an MSF course is already required in most if not all states. About the only thing you got right in your post was the fact that we are a Republic. But hey I am glad there are self-righteous people like you to tell us all how we should live....

Always thought it should be the riders choice , however if you have to wear one why not wear a approved one so there is one less thing to worry about. and the mc only roadblocks things suck
