I live around where this took place and my thoughts and prayers go to the family.
I still say let those that ride decide but I won't ride without a full face. Just me and my choice.

Let people make their own choice. This guy did, and well...
Hope his family and friends are able to find some solace in his choice.

I almost always wear my helmet. The lining wore out on my old one and the plastic was poking me, so I rode twenty minutes to town with no helmet. Gotta admit it felt fantastic, much better than with FF helmet. Still bought a HJC CL15 at lunchtime. Which is very comfortable and quiet. Not as much fun as no helmet, just insurance.

Unfortunately, sometimes the people who spoeak out for a good cause do more harm than good. That is also often the case on gun issues. I have the same view on both - I want NO government regulations, or as close as I can get.
If you're scared to ride without a helmet, wear a helmet. That doesn't mean you need to government to tell some other guy he has to wear one, just so you aren't the only guy in the crowd who looks like he's scared of motorcycles.

The report states that friends and members of the groups put their back on helmets as they left the scene. Why did they do that? That can be easily misconstruyed by the state and may lend itself to work against their position. They would have been better served to continue to ride without helmets. I do feel for his family, they didn't deserve to lose him so young in life.
I once heard a greybeard say that helmets are like condoms. Everyone knows the risk that comes with not wearing one. And for him the pleasure and the freedom of not wearing one when riding was the same as when fornicating. He knows the risks are uwanted pregnancies or sexually transmitted diseases, he's just willing to take those risks to maximize his freedom and pleasure of the act.

It sounds like it was a pack ride issue more than a helmet issue.
And what really gets me about these reports are the people who jump in with "he would have survived had he been wearing a helmet". How the hell do they know? People die wearing helmets all the time.
They ended up hurting their cause much more than they helped. I agree that this could have been thought through a lot better.
