And if this cat had died while wearing a helmet we wouldn't be having this discussion. You see, if he had died while wearing a helmet we wouldn't have even heard of his untimely demise. It would not have made the news. It would not have had a lead spot on the Yahoo home page. It would have been buried on the 4th page of the local newspaper or maybe just his death listed in the obituaries.
Funny how the press gets to pick and chose which stories it does and does not sensationalize.

A. You are right that democracy is not the best form of government. In fact, it may be the worst - absolute rule by the lowest common denominator has a hard time looking better than absolute rule by one guy who was at least smart enough to make himself ruler; but
B. Fortunately, America is NOT a democracy - one of the features of our government we are most proud of. We managed to form a semi-democratic government where the majority do not have absolutely power over the minority. Unfortunately, which the founders saw that one day the majority would try to dictate a religion, restrict anti-government speech or take away guns (all of which the majority are constantly fighting to do) they did not forsee that the majority would, 200 years later, go on a paternalism rampage where they tried to protect people from their own choices in everything from fireworks to seatbelts to motorcycle helmets. If Thomas Jefferson had had a motorcycle or a car, they might have thought of that too.
In summary, just because the majority says it, that doesn't mean an American must or should respect it. That isn't what we call freedom and it certainly isn't in the American tradition. If we ever come to the point of being a simple democracy, it's time to start using those guns.

1) A democracy is an elected government
2) The US as an elected government
3) There fore the US is a democracy
4) A republic is a government without a monarchy

It's surprising then he does not have a thorough general understanding of how government works or does not know the definition of the word democracy.

majority does not always rule either, look at the health care bill that passed, it was widely unpopular with nearly 80% of american's not wanting it. if "majority ruled" it's unlikely our taxes would be even close to where they are now.

I always find these helmet debates rather ridiculous.
Statistics state that you are 35 times more likely to die in a motorcycle accident per mile driven than in a passenger car, that's 3500%, and that's for all helmeted and non-helmeted riders. Wearing a helmet means that if you are in that accident, you have a 37% higher chance of survival. Assuming helmet usage is currently at 50% of riders, you reduce your risk of dying in a motorcycle accident from 3500% per mile driven to approximately 2800% per mile driven as compared to riding in a passenger car. Either way a HUGE risk.
To me, all the gear in the world is not going to make up for the huge risk of riding in the first place. If you wanted to be safe, you wouldn't ride at all. Wearing a helmet is akin to putting on a pair of floaties and boarding the Titanic. Your safest bet would be to stay ashore.
Does wearing a helmet reduce risk? Certainly!
Does it make riding a motorcycle safe? Not even close...
