Cig lighter/acc plug in, for lighting smokes only?
Ok, so I have a new 2011 ultra classic and I buy a strobe(a purple strobe, I work funeral escort on my off days and I need lights,) light to plug into the cig lighter. Long story short, I plugged in the strobe into my bike and it doesn't work. Plug it into the cig lighter in the truck and it works. The bike's lighter works to light cigg's but not to run the strobe. Called my dealer and asked if I should bring it by, and I was told that as long as it lights ciggs there's not much more they can do.
Any Ideas how I can fix this?
Maybe swap out to a bigger fuze?
Thanks

I use my cig power for my GPS. I agree with the dealer though....that if your cigarette lighter can light a cigarette, and that is what it's intent was...what do you want them to do?
So.....buy the aux. power 'pigtail' and hook up your light and use the aux. switch, which is what it was intended for.
Maybe the cig lighter is not putting out enough amps to run your purple light. I would not increase the fuse size.
As a last thought, maybe the plug on your purple light has a differant shape and may not be making contact with the Harley recepticle? I guess to check it, you could plug in your light, and use a 12v probe/tester to check for power in your lights wires?

IF that's the case, might be easier to reverse the wires on the light plug. Also check to see if the contacts on the outside of the plug are making contact inside of the cig lighter socket. Some are pretty shallow and the contacts may be too high on the light plug to make proper contact. If so, get a different plug end for the light at Auto Zone with the contacts closer to the end of the plug. GL

Check the wires on the plug, many harleys have the wires reversed from the factory. Orange wire to the center, ground to the case is correctly wired. If you don't smoke get P/N 91844-97, it's an accessory plug cover that eliminates the lighter so you don't misplace the lighter when you take it out. This issue has been gone over in the past, good luck.

I've used my lighter to power my heated gloves, without any changes to the fuse. Better check to see what the amp draw of the strobe light is, and see what the fuse is rated for. You may have to wire an outlet right off the battery, or use the tender pigtail.,,

If that was the case it would "blow" the fuse. Ether the polarity is incorrect or the plug is not making contact.
If the polarity is incorrect it need to be fixed...lots of fancy new electronic gadgets will go up in smoke if you reverse the polarity on their chargers.

There's plenty of power going to the cigarette lighter on a 2011 Ultra--considering it has a 15 amp fuse.
Just be careful when plugging things into the lighter socket that stick out any further than the head of the cigarette lighter. When you turn the wheel to full left lock, it will push whatever you have plugged in up against the tank, and just far enough off to short and blow the fuse.
Took me only five fuses to figure out what was happening.
