I would prowl around on your local Craigslist, amazing deals can be had. That is where I got my Icon leather; paid 1/3 what new price was.

Also, advrider has a sale section similar to HDF...used deals can let you pick a few used items and then sell the ones you don't like/use.

I find leather just too heavy and warm most of the time. About 90% of my riding I'm wearing either textile or mesh.

IMO, a jacket without armor is not a riding jacket.

I think armor is just as important as abrasion resistance.

That being said, I wear a leather jacket with armor every day except the hottest of hottest days we get here in NY, then it's mesh with armor. But I am afraid of mesh, man... just seems like it would shred your skin up. Not as bad as the pavement, but mesh can't compare to the silk lining of my leather. Or, fake silk, rather...

I have both leather and armored mesh.
Leather for 65 and below temps.
Armored mesh for above 65 temps.
Strictly personal choice.

I have a solid black mesh with zip out rain liner and quilted vest. I use it all year.

Late October thru about March I like leather. When its hot, I wear a Vanson Vent Max mesh jacket.

I've got a bunch of jackets (leather and textile mesh). Now I ride with Motoport Air Mesh Kevlar jacket and pants. They both have waterproof/breathable liners and I can wear my heated jacket with the setup. Best of all worlds. Best armor/protection, waterproof/breathable, cool in summer, warm in the cold, and a custom fit. It just doesn't get any better!
